I used a photo reference for the sketch and the coloring. I sketched it freehand (did not trace) using a Graphire tablet in Photoshop and painted it using the same.

Yes, SCREEN and MULTIPLE are the absolute best when adding light/dark areas to your work. Use Dodge and Burn only sparingly.
