It is it's own kind of paint. I mean, it has unique qualities that set it apart from other kinds of paints. It's water based, which is nice. It dries pretty fast, and generally isn't as thick as oil paint. It's more opaque than watercolor.
All of these things can be good or bad depending on your style.

Ben has it right. Let me add that acrylics were originally created in the 1950's (I think), to replace oil paint. Instead, what happened was they created something totally new that has it's own properties. Many really fantastic and well respected fine-art painters use acrylics.

I just put some information up on my Tripod site that might be of some help. Look in the tutorials section.

i prefer to work with acrylics for a few reasons:

A) high opacity

B) because of the properties of acrylics, you can build up thinkness and create nice textures, or conversely, with a steady hand, you can paint on porous cement and make it look like paper

C) it dries quickly, so you don't have to worry about your colours turning muddy if you mix them quickly like with oils.

if you're looking to do bold, quick work, it's definately worth it.

i for one would never try to paint my leather jacket with oils. :P
