Hiya...
well I was just wondering, how did u ppl learn to use those drawing/modeling progs in the first place?

Like, did you just do things until you got it right, or did you just read a bunch of books/tutorials or what?

Just thought since I'm trying to learn how to use 3d progs like max & truespace (well just max actually, I already gave up with truespace ), and I have absolutely no clue how they work. Total hebrew to me.

Mmm... I think this should've gone to the Digital art forum... well what the heck

i already knew how to draw. i had played in MSpaint...so it was just and upgrade to PS.

3d? umm, i borrowed infini-d and bryce from my friend eli years ago. didnt like infini-d so i worked on bryce...i just played with the program till it did something or crashed.

now a days? Lightwave........im good at the animating and setting up bones and doing all that, but im not that great of a modeler(the polygons make fun of me). so my friends in art are around the pixels and keyframes.

- <---dash thing...yep. confused? look at the time stamp of this posting....3:30 am.

'Alo,

I personally learned to work with digital art at school (HS), in Visual Communications. We first learned Illustrator, and the second half of the semester began using Photoshop. The upper levels in the class Vis Com 2, 3 and above (I'm in 3) also use 3D programs (Infini-D, Bryce, Poser). I honestly learned most of what I know now from my peers in the class and from borrowing, and later owning the software. I loved doing comp. generated art, so continued producing and learning more stuff

3d studio release 4.. i think it was affected or my other 3d modeler friend who made a smiley in release 4, a looong time ago. i was jelaous, i wanted to do that too. so i got into modeling. naturally, i sucked hardcore, and gave up after discovering Painter 3.1 (fractal design's). a year with that, then it was photoshop. 's taken me 3 years to get where i am now, with photoshop. which isn't much.

again the forced skill over talent -deal...

but yeah, learned release 4, max 1,2 and 3, a little lightwave, painter 3.1, painter 6, illustrator, freehand, truespace 2,3 and 4, and so forth along the way..

Hi Rincewind,
Don't know what stage you're at exactly, but from my experience, I found these to be helpful:

1) Start with Inspiration
...or the "Hey, I wish I could do that" attitude...
Either see someone who does something you think is cool with a graphic application (2D or 3D)... or just see work you like done with the app.

2) Try it Yourself
...either jump right into a package and experiment, do some tutorials, read the directions (shyah right!). If you haven't mastered an application before, it might be a benefit to actually read some - in addition to experimenting.

3) Get Help
...from friends who know the app, tutorials off the web, or take a class somewhere.

4) Take up Basket-weaving
...can be very relaxing, I've heard.

I've tried all except the last one. I tried underwater beebee-stacking instead :P

I got into graphics from the traditional end. I always drew pictures - on paper, napkins, my bedroom walls (parents loved that)... and when I was 15, I got DeluxePaint for my Dad's PC (it was a 286 I think *laughs*). I fiddled around with it - but one thing's for sure "in my day" applications were a lot simpler. Now, there's a gabillion buttons everywhere (as B mentioned) or it's just difficult to learn either the concepts and/or the hierarchy of commands.
In College I got exposed to better computers and software. The Amiga was a good graphics computer then, and I learned DeluxePaint Animator on it(woohoo!). But, it was only until I actually saw another person making some AMAZING stuff with a 3D app that I started learning one. My friend was making these gnarly Mech's on the Amiga with a 3D program called Imagine. So, I jumped into it, got frustrated ('cause I had so much inspiration - but no knowledge & less patience) and almost quit. Well, I stuck with it and went on to spend an entire semester in the computer lab. Barely ate or slept. I landed a job at a videogame company with the work I'd created. Then it was onwards from there... but that's how it started for me

Book ends here.

Hope this helps in some way! Don't give up - just sit back and enjoy the ride

-k

Um... I think I made a pacman of sorts in 3ds.. Indeed a long time ago.
As for Photoshop, I, too proceeded from painter to it, and just kept trying to learn the damn thing. I'm still learning, 'course.

oh yes, the semipacman. my bad.

a good rule with photoshop is that if it doesn't do what you want it to do, get angry and make it your bitch. works every time, for me at least.

logic and thinking also helps...
