I've been lurking for a short while now, and have just started to leave comments when and where i see fit - my question is...
Do people mind if their work is compared to other artists (both on the forums and off) and if so....why?
I ask as i do not wish to offend people by comparing styles/themes and giving the impression that they are merely hacks.
(Apologies if this should reside in the Random Musings thread)

Most people will probably take it as a compliment, a few others may take it as meaning they need to work a bit more to define their own particular style. And probably a very few will get annoyed but it is almost impossible to avoid stepping on every single person's toes in this crowd. |

Huh! It would be nice, really, to have a few of the veteran artists here (i.e. ones who've seen and drawn it all, with a good load of posts under their belts) talk about etiquette. It seems to me there is no cause for upset if anyone compares anyone else, unless of course that message is PHRASED badly: "You remind me of <artist>, try harder." There was a thread earlier by an inker, and someone else posted a scan of Pollock's dribble-style work to insult him. When the intention is clearly to piss you off, obviously, that's bad, but so is anything.
Not that you're asking my opinion, but I only get upset by artists who attack "realism", or even worse, when they condemn your style because it DOESN'T fit an already-recognised format. Saying a head is disproportionate, or that <color> doesn't match <theme>... It's useless hacking.
I would also say never to post an altered version of someone's work exampling how it could be better -- something I frequently do, and need to apologise for now. Helpful words are fine, but seizing a work and running your number on it is RUDE. |

Thanks for those responses - its good to hear different peoples thoughts on this matter.
(p.s. - RoundEye - that's not likely to happen - i've not seen anything else done in the style you do ) |

I'm pretty new to this forum. So far, from my 2 posts, I've been compared to 3 different artists.... One I idolize, the other I highly respect, and the other I was not familar with.
I take them as complements, because I'm still trying to find my own artistic identity... No doubt, who's work you study and what art you like will affect your style. |

I would be fine with being compared as long as it's not something like "my baby brother's preschool fingerpainting picture". |
