This image is done for a personal screenplay project Im working on. A science lab is located inside an alien cave and a research sub is leaving the lab. All of the elements in this image were hand drawn first then put together using Photoshop. I can still draw much faster using markers and brushes then using tablet. But Photoshop definitely cut the finishing time down in half. 10,000 X 2500 is the image size I normally work with.

Hi Day Dreamer!
What program(s) did you use and can you provide some detail shots? |

Very cool! Agreed!
I don't know how to say it ... but I think all those details take away from the picture.
Those three blue (organic?) background thingies are about equal in size and compete for attention.
It doesn't really look like an underwater seascape ... IMHO ...it looks as if the vehicle is flying.
And 'bout the water surface ... is seems as if it is right in front of (rather than above) us.
Does that make sense? |

Shikome, AndyT, and Hyptosis,
Thanks for your comments!
At this point in the story, this is the first time the viewers/readers are introduced to the moon and the cave where the science lab is located in, so the focus was intentionally put on the environment and not on the sub. The only story point need to come across for this shot is that a sub is departing.
I tried to paint an environment similar to the photographs taken inside a pristine cave by divers. The water is so clear you cant tell it is underwater until you notice the people floating in the middle of the picture are all wearing diving suits. In this case, the water surface. |

I have to agree with AndyT. The detail is fabulous, but on the whole it's hard to "see". But it's fascinating and I'm still here looking at it, so what do I know? |

Maybe I'm mistaken and yours the way to go But I think it doesn't depend on where the focus is.
And I think there's a perspective issue. I guess the eye level should be higher. If the sub is moving towards the surface the VP would even be below the eye level. Right now the surface doesn't seem to be parallel to the ground.
To me the lighting is confusing ... but maybe it's just me!?

Hey Al Yu, it's good to see u posting again after a long absence.
The scale is pretty nice and don't look out of scale like some pictures that I see now and then.
Gah, 10,000x2500. Now, that's a proportion. I'm getting my computer upgraded so I too can have enough memory to paint large format in PS.

AndyT and Ed: Thanks for your comments!
AndyT: Two paper airplanes are flying inside a room, one flying up and one flying down. Where should I draw the horizon and vanishing point? Should airplane A determind where the horizon is or B? Or the viewer's eye level is the one? Inside a 3D space, a vehicle can be heading up, down left or right, it doesn't have to use the exact horizon as the viewer!
Ed: For more than a year, a page would take more than 10 minutes to open. I simply could not wait that long. I use Mac but only had problem with this forum. Strange! |

I realize I'm alone with that opinion...
and the box around the sub is not very accurate to say the least . Guess there is no need to change something then.

Did I say that? I meant because the sub is moving towards the surface its VP should be below the eye level.
I just don't have a clue which pointers in the picture should help to understand where the eye level is ... maybe its a good idea to show if / where the tree like things reach the surface!? I guess without that surface the picture would work for me too
