Its been a while since I posted here. Hi to anyone who remembers me

Got bored at work and drew this portrait from the front cover of a magazine, I forgot how much fun this could be.

The B&W is black biro on A4 photocopier paper, I scanned it into photoshop to add the colour.

Tell me what you think.

not bad, but a difficult subject - i think you made her look older.

cheers hase, personally I like the linedrawing but it loses alot of the feeling without the make-up. The colouring is really loose and scribbley, I might try to refine it a bit later

Just two things I noticed if you wanted to improve.

-Above both eyes, I would pull the shadow on her top eyelid even further out to improve the expression to look more like the magazine cover's.

-On the right side of her nose (MY right side), I would bring in the shading a bit more to be more symmetrical with the other side, as the right side looks straight and makes the nose look like it's crooked.

If you wanted to spend more time on this, I would try softening up the shading, adding more tones and maybe using the blur tool a bit to get a younger look. You're off to a great start!

I like the sketch, but the color version does indeed make her look older (and less like the actress herself).

Part of the problem is that you don't have her cheekbones as sharply defined as they are in the picture. You also widened her jaw, shrank the size of her mouth and lips, and enlarged and rounded her eyes. The differences in some cases are very small, but part of the challenge of making realistic portraits of living individuals is that the human eye is very quick to pick out subtle differences in facial structure. This is a similar problem to that which 3D artists trying to create photo-realistic humans have in both structure and movement. We are so attuned to how our own species moves and looks (often on a subconscious level) that little alterations stand out like sore thumbs.

Again that is not saying this isn't a good effort (certainly better than I could do), just trying to help you locate the areas that are keeping the portrait from looking like the subject.
