For some reason, every once a while, either its my RAM or my page files(system cache?)will just start to do its thing and I'd have to sit there and wait for it. I don't know if it's purging or loading. All I know is that it just goes on and on and on. Is this normal? I don't recall dealing with that in the past.
Maybe it's because I've set my page files to high? But I set it at the recommended 125% of the RAM. |

Are you still on that ghetto old win98 eh? If you set pagefile size to the same number, minimum and maximum, then it shouldn't change size at all.
But i suggest win2k/XP for better control, memory usage, and everything.

For example, everytime I reboot, it does it.
Other times, it does it whenever it needs to free up space or something(I'm guessing). I have 160 gigs total between the 3 HD's, and none of them are over 50% full. They are all 7200 RPM IDE too. |

I defrag at least once a couple of weeks.
I'll try your suggestion and boot up Task Manager the next time my puter starts freaking out again.
My guess is that the 512 mb of RAM is purging itself, but why would it need to purge itself, and why does it take so damn long? |

while on the subject, I heard somewhere a long time ago that defragging a scsi harddrive on an array will actually make it go batshit... can anyone verify this or can I safely defrag this puppy? _________________ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? |

You been drinkin' bad Sake again, Lunatique?
"I'd have to sit there and wait for it." Do you mean everything freezes up and you cant even move your mouse, or why do you have to wait? Or you're just talking about HDD activity by flashing HDD LED?
And ehh.. there is no real "recommended" setting for a pagefile. Some people will say set it to a full separate HD, and others will say disable it.
I say win2k makes pretty good assumption by default. Go back and check your settings in there..
That and check for trojans. I forgot what program though eheh. |

I really don't know what IS causing it, however I will suggest the one thing the others have not. It may not be a hardware problem you could be infected, with some kind of trojan or virus. One of the ways I check is I (scan with norton) and I go to the processes list, and then search to find out where every program on it is (on the harddrive) to make sure I know why its there. Often this harddrive usage can be caused by things like that.
just one more thing to check for if you can't find any other solution. |

Windows2000 has that bad habit to swap system libraries to the harddisk even if enough ram is available and even if they are needed by some programs... So sometimes if you change to other running programs Windows2000 needs to reload those libraries from Harddrive which will take some time (in the worst case some seconds). I had the same problem and I found a registry-key which solved the problem for me. Give me some time to check where I found it
Imho that could be your problem... _________________ www.alientechnologies.de

Do this on your own responsibility:
Open Regedt32, go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\MemoryManagement
and change the value of "DisablePagingExecutive" to "1"... Then restart and try it.
Make shure you saved your registry before you apply that. Imho you cant do any harm with this key but the registry is the vital part of Win2k... So make shure you have a backup at hand... _________________ www.alientechnologies.de

Hey, that tweak3d link is great. I used visit it for UT and Half-Life tweaks. Didn't even think about it for win2000k tweaks.
Looks like it's just a normal thing for Win2000k to do. I went ahead and tweaked some stuff. Looks like it might be working.
ReAktor- I need to know what that reg key change does exactly before I try it.... |
