I was actually sort of surprised when I went there... y'see my girlfriend is American and I consider her to be one of the most intelligent, good-hearted and thoroughly good persons I have ever met... and of course, everybody in the rest of the world slags America in one way or the other, but I've always tried to keep an open opinion about them since they DO do a lot of good for the rest of the world, and as ANY nation of their size would do, they also try to profit from it.

BUT! After having been there (worcester, boston, connecticut) I was really really surprised. I mean I had expected her friends to be nice people as well... easy going, fairly intelligent and so on...

... my god.

She took me to one of their fraternity parties near WPI in Worcester, and it was the stupidest thing I have honestly EVER seen. It's hard to describe in words, but the general thing was a bunch of fat retards in flannel, moping around drunk out of their skulls after one beer, behaving about as maturely as a 14 year old would, girls giggling and passing out all over the place etc... and this was apparently normal.

I was surprised to see that my girlfriend who spent the summer here in Ireland, and has been to Sweden numerous times would have this opinion after having said multiple times that she liked europe a lot better and that we're just so much better when it comes to intelligence, alcohol, partying etc...

But yap, this was the way a frat party was supposed to be. I lost all respect for American College people at that point (yeap it's a generalization, but I'm sticking to it)... and I'll tell you, after having spent some time with 25+ year olds, I don't have too much respect for them either...

they're just all very... narrow minded, un-educated and... immature...

just my own opinion, but yah, the general population of America is really something the world could do without.

My wife is american.
It's kind of funny how we both kind of agree on all the good things and bad things that the US has to offer.
Yet we have discussions almost daily where we start putting down each others countries. It's lots of fun.
Anyways..
I always point out the WWF shit or Jerry Springer and say...hey look..it's americans.
Then my wife will say..But that doesn't represent all the americans.
And I know that. But that doesn't take away the fact that those actual people in the stadium and that Jerry Springer is actually a real tv show.
It's sad.

Strata..My wife's friends are really cool people. Smarter and more culturally developed than almost anyone I meet here in holland. So they do exist.
Church was a nightmare though..hehe

People here in holland always openly loathe the americans. My wife actually gets a lot of shit here.
Yet you see more people wearing Tommy Hillfiger or Calvin Klein here then you would in the US, the Mac opens a new restaurant like every week and "God loves america" movies Like Pearl Harbour and Independance day do great for two months whereas dutch productions usually disappear after the first week.
It's sad. We are rapidly turning into a colony of the US while everyone openly talks about how bad the US is.
I guess what I wanted to say is that I don't loathe americans. What I do hate is that their way of life spreads out and there doesn't seem to be anyone that minds except for some weird bearded guys in the middle east that want the world to return to the middle ages.

For every bad thing, there's a good thing. The intelligent people in the U.S. can't stand the Jerry Springer/WWF type either. It sucks that the average American can be quite..well, you know.

BUT, how about listing some good things about this place?

1)Video game industry
2)Film industry(yes, there's a lot of big Hollywood crap movies, but there are just as many awesome films. I don't need to name them, do I?"
3)San Francisco and New York.
4)Rock and Jazz
5)Comic books(although I'm more of a manga person in terms of storytelling).
6)High-tech industry

Let's keep the list going. No more hate.

luna: valid point, but what I (and I suspect others) are trying to say is that those industries are not really represented by the average joe schmo american...

I agree, they're very good things... I'm not disputing the fact that there's a lot of good things on offer in America, and that a lot of good things have come out of America, but as a people, like you can say swedes are a people - separate from Sweden the nation with industries and such, you're just not measuring up to our holy european pogo stick ;D

it's like you've written on your webpage about the chineese... you find them revolting and you find them to be a lower standing kind of people... never the less you've found some great friends there... we think the same about the Americans... =)

But the two of you have now gone too far. You do NOT disrespect the WWF. There are some very fine... athletes there.
Plus it's my favourite saturday morning entertainment... it's like a really macho docu-soap... it's fantastic =D

Well, most of us are trying to discriminate for no reason at all. There lies a real danger in this practice. Sure, it's all fun and games right now, but if you think about Samaritans, Hutus and Tutsis, Jews... The thought that American-bashing is popular, is revolting.

The reason Europeans are inundated by American pop-culture, like Britney Spears, Blach Hawk Down or weekend-movies is because there are just as much people over here as there are Americans that like that stuff, or couldn't care about what they're watching when stuffing their face.
We are to blame for it, not offering alternatives. Of course, the pecuniary strength of the Americans is bigger...
Though we also have a group of bodybuilders deliberately trying to spread the greatness of WWF. Via tv.

One of my dreams is to travel through the states, following Kerouacs Road, and maybe more, because it is such an extraordinary land. We are all earthlings.

Bah, let them spew hate.

If everyone had to bite their tongue we would never see their true colors.

And if I'm arrogant and pompus because of the geographic location I live in, what does that make people who carry on and on about how America sucks and their country is better? Not arrogant and pompus???

Anyway, I know those arrogant and pompus American type that people can't stand and I think they are just as stupid as the people who act the same way about their country.

Jerks are jerks, a-holes are a-holes, idiots are idiots etc etc. If America seems to have a majority of them it is probably because America recruits worldwide.

hehehe that was actually a pretty good quote =)

and of course you're right in what you're saying, but that's not the point of the discussion, the point is WHY americans are always being slagged off as opposed to every other country. You don't really see the majority of europeans talk crap about belgium do you?

but you're right, of course we're no better, and of course he who is without guilt should toss the first stone and all that... fair enough =)

I'm just as guilty of America bashing at times as people from other countries really. I'm just not a flag waving nationalist kinda guy I guess. I'd probably bash other countries too if I lived there long enough to know about them. Speaking of:

Is it true that Canada has a Canadian content quota for TV? Like the Candian government says the TV stations have to play some percentage of stuff from Canada each day and the rest can be whatever?

"WHY americans are always being slagged off as opposed to every other country. You don't really see the majority of europeans talk crap about belgium do you?"

Because America's on top! *Everyone* hates the top dog, or want's to see him fail.

Historically speaking, Europe is a far better example of arrogance and hubris than America.
Two World Wars and worldwide colonialism come to mind.

And Strata, using a fraternity party as an example of American culture is ridiculous.
Although I would say that fraternity culture is pretty consistent throughout.

America is a huge, diverse country. Culture varies from state to state, in sometimes *huge* ways. America has 260 million people, how many does homogeneous Sweden have? Don't compare Sweden to America, compare Europe to America.
Should we lump English soccer hoolilgans with Swedes? Or Nazi Skinheads? or ETA terrorists?

So what you're saying is that people in general can not be considered 'as normal' in a country with a larger population than in a smaller country? How do you explain this arguement? You make more money/pay less tax in America... you have larger living areas in America... you have a greater diversity of culture (something that really shouldn't make you less sophisticated). That's what we're comparing. And no, you shouldn't lump together english football hooligans with Swedish ones, you should compare english football hooligans to swedish football hooligans etc.

Of course Europe have been the bigger bigot and all that through the times... America has been around for 300 years now.

edit: wrong wording.

I love roundeyes anti- American comments they are so laughable coming from a country most Americans see as a 51'st state.

Uhh you do know that if our economy didn't support your sad pathetic little country you wouldn't even be there. If Americans didn't invent the internet and just about everything else you use in your house and in your life you would still be living in a log cabin..ohh hell it's Canada you probably do..If our military didn't defend your little tiny populace you would have been invaded a LOOONGGGGGG time ago.

Hey guys I know lets let Canada run the America!! That way we can have a horrible economy totally reliant on tourism for survival and never stand up for anything we believe in. Now I know the true nature of your hatred lies in our superior

Economy
Science
Art
Productivity rate
Education System
Our music and culture
Our taxes are far lower
Tell me one person ho knows your priministers name??
Military
Our woman actually look like woman
Your country full of crying loud mouth wimps
and basically our over all world dominance ,

but you don't have to whine about it. Our county may not be as clean as yours but we also don't have 30 million people in our entire country. Our beer might not be as strong as yours but we are not all drunken loggers either. Hey ya you guys are good at hockey but hell who plays hockey..inbreed white trash with sub par IQ's,I guess that's something to be proud of?? We have better things to do then CURL on a Saturday night. Roundeye remember it's always the county with the smallest dick that talks the loudest and you sure got a big mouth

All and all America sucks but Canada swallows, nuff said.

On top of what?
See thats exactly why people bash the US. Not because they think the US is on top but because so many people from the US seem to think that.

People can say how stupid americans are and they would be discriminating. True.
But the way the US has behaved in world politics the past years cannot be denied.
And I don't think it is strange at all that the US makes many people around the world wanna puke.

and on top of what ed just said, magic pen: it's exactly comments like that that are just more fuel for our fire.

not that this is a crusade or anything like that, but if you're wondering why we have our opinions, take a look at the things you sometimes say... comments like: America won the second world war, America supports the world, America invented everything electronic etc... 'tis simply not true.

CAN'T we all just get along?

I vote for the golbal village. No more racial/sexual/cultural/national seperation and prejudice.

If an alien race attacked earth in a full on assault tomorrow, we'd all just refer to us as "us humans," and them as "dirty aliens."

So, let's pretend the aliens are coming, and we are just humans.

Starting tomorrow, I'll no longer be pissy when I walk the streets in Fuzhou. I'll see this place with a set of new eyes.

Bwahhhh.hha ha ha ha ha...

Testimony from an american stuck in canadian hell ( swiped from the net )

People, wake up!! I'm in Canada for already a year and I've
never ever in my life felt myself so lonely, depressed and
bored as in this f..ing Canada!! That's the only word I can
use to tell you about this so called "wonderful country"!!!
Mothaf...ing Canada!! I'm 29 years old, I've a good job
here, but the only things I do in Canada are to work,
sleep, work out and eat!!! I don't have time for anything
else and every single day I feel exhausted and at the end
of the day I just want to take a gun( I wish I had one!!!)
and just make a slaughter in the street, keeping the last
bullet for myself! Canadians are the most boring people
I've ever met! The only interests they have are TV, beer
and McDonalds!!! Believe me, I deal with at least 65
canadians every day and I'm responsible for my words!

Canada is becoming the place where all the jerks and criminals from the whole world use to come!!! Toronto and other big cities are crowded with so called refugees from South Asia, China and Carribean!!! You think that criminality doesn't exist here??:-)) Bullshit!!! It's getting worse than in Russia with every single f..ing day!! Do you want to stay in a country where 50% of the population can't even learn the language??? And you think that Canada has any future?? It'll be "killed" by all those immigrants, unskilled ones, who come from the 3rd world, hoping to live here on subsidies and loans!!! Do you want to work 12 hours in order that your taxes go to support f... jerks and refugees???

If you still want to come to Canada, get married before you
come here!! Canadian girls are totally stupid and ugly!!!
They never take care of themselves and look terrible!! But
at the same time they are so f..ing aware of sexual
harassment and even a look at the girl in the bus or subway
may lead to the prosecution!!! Think again, if you want to
come to the country, which seems to be a paradise for many
of you, but is a hell in fact!!!

Were not communicating well , Strata.

Are we comparing sophistication of culture?
Isn't that biased?

quote
Quote:
I'm not disputing the fact that there's a lot of good things on offer in America, and that a lot of good things have come out of America, but as a people, like you can say swedes are a people - separate from Sweden the nation with industries and such, you're just not measuring up to our holy european pogo stick

You're generalising.
To draw general conclusions of *anything*, without experiencing it's diversity or depth, is ignorant.

Sweden has far fewer people, less geographic land mass to separate those people and therefore a much more consistent national attitude and culture. The states of Maine and Texas are like two different planets.
Europe <> America is a much more favorable comparison. What do taxes and land mass have to do with sophistication of culture anyway?
I'll leave evaluation of Sophistication to someone else.

When I say "on top", I don't mean it in any moral or absolute sense. It's what's perceived, by the American people and the rest of the world.
I would wager that America is in other countries daily newspapers, that American culture whether it be McDonalds or 'Black Hawk Down' are available in their theatres. And their is no dispute to America's economic superiority, if you measure superiority in terms of GDP.
That along with American foreign policy breeds resentment. This has historically always been the case whether the country be the US, Russia, Britain, or the Ottoman empire.

Ah, what I commented on was the issue that America is much larger than sweden. Sure you have a greater population than Sweden, but you also have a MUCH larger land-mass. Thus it is proportionally comparable.

How is sophistication of culture biased? Sure you have a multi-cultural society on a much larger scale, but as I said, this should not mean that the sophistication or culture of the average american, even in a country as diverse you have to be able have an average, should be less than that of any country in Europe. Remember the fact that we do accept a PLETHORA of immigrants every year... almost on a larger scale than america if you think in the sense that no refugee of war (except cubans) has fled to America in the last 30 years... meanwhile germany, finland, sweden, england... all these countries are accepting hundreds of thousands of immigrants every year.

The difference being, americas immigrants are usually emigrating there out of their own free will. This also means that they are willing to change their own culture to a certain extent to fit in better with the American society, whereas when it comes to refugees of war they usually don't want to be in the country where they've been placed, and in many cases refuse to conform to the culture in the country.

In spite of all this, I would still call Americans a less culturally advanced, and a less sophisticated society.

Of course it's a generalisation, but there's no way to argue a topic like this without generalising. I can't say that Sweden is a certain way without generalising and I've lived there almost all of my life.
There will always be differences, but that's what average is there for.

What I meant by taxes and land mass, is that if you pay lower taxes you get more money, thus there's no claim to the arguement that people are poor'er in america and that this would lead to a lower 'standard of people'. Same goes with landmass, ie, people are not living on top of each other, thus leading to the same thing.

Noone argued this, it was just me guarding against unsaid arguements. A perfectly legal part of rhetorics I might add ;D

I'm not sure I'm making sense here, as I'm barely making sense to myself, but what you have to look at in a debate like this is the average individual. Of course this means there are differences, but you can't include EVERY difference, we wouldn't be able to have a debate if we did... and see all the fun we would miss out on? =)

And yah, we get news about america every day. We see American films every day. We have McDonalds everywhere. We also get news about Africa when that arises. We get french films if they're popular enough. We have LOADS of different fast food restaurants from different parts of europe.

Can you say the same?
