One of my favorite artist's is Odd Nerdrum. i own a few of his over-sized Art books and have always been fascinated by his style/technique (along with his subject matter)

recently, i wanted to replicate his technique in Painter 11.. i started out by spending a lot of time learning the Impasto brushes inside and out-- to the point where i modified them to create my own unique variants.. and then i created a Custom palette with my own brushes.. i spent several weeks created abstract paintings, getting really comfortable with the behaviors, etc.. and then decided to use my learning to create a figurative study of one of his works.

so, over the course of 2 weekends-- i created this (total time approx 16hrs)

If you use/know Painter 11-- i mainly used Thick Oil brushes (modified), Grainy chalk (modified to act as Impasto), various palette knives.. a modified Sargant brush that just applies Impasto and i constantly switch between paper variants (these affect the tooth of the paper)

i plan on creating more of these studies in the future.. i had a lot of fun and learned a ton about creating a digital impasto look!

thanks for the feedback and kind words! Smile

as for your questions: my website is back up and running now-- try again.. it's out of date-- i badly need to update it! Smile

as for size: these are done at 300 dpi-- around 3500x3000

painter is a great tool-- i've been using it for a long time now.. but never really used the 'impasto tools'; i spent a lot of time learning them recently.. and found that i still needed to modify some to get the results i wanted/needed. i also created my own custom tool palette that contains the 6-7 brushes i use to create that look.. this simplifies things and keeps me from having to 'browse' for the brushes each time i want to switch.. i just keep that custom palette open and pick/change brushes from there

i am working on another study now.. should be done with it by this coming weekend.. i'll post it here when done

as for the books: i bought those at a Barnes and Noble bookstore in California.. try online?

Fantastic study, Im tempted to try out the impastos in painter now.

Nerdrum used to live in an old library downtown here a few years back. You could stop by and knock on his door and he would invite you in for a coffee to talk about art, funny character.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Here's another head study that i just completed.. again, using the same techniques as the previous one (digital impasto) using Painter 11

i saved out iterative progress images during the creation of this image-- and i'll put together an animated .gif sequence that shows each stage (stay tuned for that)
