i want to put some bat wings on a person. how? it has to look realistic... i don't want them to be simply attached to the shoulder blades... so there should be some sort of joint. but i don't know how i would go about drawing that, or how it would work out. is the joint connected to the shoulder blades? would there be some sort of pit in the bone so a round-ish joint can fit in it? |

Try the bookstore, on birds. Or, I don't remember what the URL is, but there are some web sites on the anatomy of Birds, and Bats, they all end up in the same book somehow...I have a few books on bird anatomy, gotta find one of them though to answer your question...I'll try to get back to you tomorrow with more specific details, if you haven't already found what you need...good luck with the hunt... |

I'm sure you can find resources online for bats.
Interestingly, a bat's wings are made up of five "fingers" that are streched out to form the joints. Earlier on the evolutionary calendar, the joints were, in fact, fingers. So there are five or them, and they actually do resemble a stretched hand. Over the joints is a thin membrane of skin, which is usually somewhat translucent.
This concludes my bat knowledge. Again, look for some photos online |

Umm. . .wings like angels, right? I have had way too many problems with this issue so I will guide you with my experience (eh? Wow that sounded a bit pretentious). Anyhow, wings are connected to the scapula, which are the shoulder blades. What makes the wings look real is the drooping effect caused by the wait of the wing on the shoulders of the figure. I will upload a sketch soon so hand on tight.

The main problem with adding wings to someone that already has arms is that... well... as far as "real" creatures go, there isn't anything that HAS both wings and arms. Miles Teves had a pretty cool take on the issue (http://www.milesteves.com/images/nocturnaimage.jpg - caution, nudity), though I think it may just be the composition of the piece that I like so much. But somehow I have a feeling this isn't what you're going for. ;)
So how to make realistic looking wings. The main considerations are that they're going to need to be attached somewhere, and they're going to need some pretty hefty muscles to support them. The shoulder blades are already reserved for use with the arms, so you'd probably want to bring the base of the wings inward towards the spine a bit, so they wouldn't conflict.
Then the muscles.... well, honestly, I don't know what you'd do here. ;) You can either go for the bat-wing style (demonic?) or bird-wing (angelic?), and each will differ slightly.
For bat wings, one of the better examples I've seen is the character Purgatori from Chaos Comics. The stories are a bit trite, so I'd just search the internet for a few pics. For angelic wings... well, there are plenty of angel pictures if you look a bit. I seem to recall Spooge having drawn one at some point... you also might check out the movie Dogma (by Kevin Smith, of Clerks fame - shame on you if you don't know who I'm talking about.) There are a few neat scenes toward the end that show off the latest angel-wing technology.
Whew. Hope this helps. |
