Feng's style and technique inspired me to do something a bit different with my company's Christmas card this year (I usually knock something out in PhotoShop loaded with filters and flares ).
This is watercolor, color pencil and gouache on Foxriver's Confetti "Kaleidoscope" card stock. I used card stock because of the multiple layers of watercolor I applied and was quite pleased with the results. There was no degradation in the quality of the stock, only a little warpage, and after each wash, a few fibers would lift which added extra tooth for the color pencil .
I'm not entirely happy with the layout and feel it's overworked in some areas, but overall I'm fairly pleased with how it turned out. I definitely will be doing more pieces in this style.
Anyway, I would appreciate any comments and/or critiques. It's too late to change anything because it has already gone to press, but any suggestions would be helpful in the future...
Cheers!
...and a detail...
p.s.
That blob in the middle is supposed to be a pomegranate...

I'm sorry, I can't respond, I have to pick my jaw up from the floor. Beautifully done! No crits from me.

I like.
I've always been too impatient for watercolor so I can easily respect someone that can put out a lovely image like yours.

This is well done Waldo. I like the texture of the paper showing through.
My only comment would be that all the sphereical shapes are still a bit flat....especially the orange fruit. A stronger core shadow and a bit brighter highlight might pop it out. I donno....i'm not that great w/ watercolor. Where's Fred when you need him???
Now i wanna try something simliar to this on my environments w/ waterdowned gouache.
cool...

I like this a lot. Very suave composition and color palette. I can see what Feng means with the flatness of your rendering - it could be more dimensional. However, it's a very graphic design sort of image, so the flatness doesn't bother me too much.
I'm curious too - what kinda company is it?

Greetings all and thanks for your kind comments and suggestions.
I agree that the image looks a bit flat. I have the original in front of me and even though it has more depth than the scan, it's not quite enough. I'm one of those types that needs someone standing over me with a hammer to whack me up side the head when it's time to stop or when I need to focus on something else. This forum has provided many whacks . I'll keep all of this in mind in the future...
As far as the company I work for, it's in the exciting and glamorous field of environmental consultation. I'm supposed to make my company and our clients look good while they're busy paving over the world. I took a wrong turn on the career path sometime back. Initially I was hired to do all sorts of illustrations and graphics to be incorporated into reports and such, but over the years those responsibilities have morphed into others. Now I am the master of Visual Simulations - conceptual before & after (I'm currently adding urban sprawl to Murrieta Hot Springs!) and the purveyor of PowerPoint (insert yawn here). The only gaming taking place in this company is the games we play with clients and the endangered little creatures running about. I hope to correct that wrong turn sometime soon, but I'm now married with mortgage and changing careers now will be a bit dicier...
Anyway, I ramble, enough about me.
As far as Fred is concerned, I'm taking his figure drawing class at Watts and I'll run this by him tomorrow and get his input too. Francis, you work with him correct? Do you two work side-by-side or do you have different responsibilities? Just curious.
Later and thanks again all! I'll post stuff as they come around. Have a great weekend!
p.s.
Jezebel - Many moons ago I lived in Mesquite for a summer on the appropriately named street of "Grubb". How's Big D?
Solitaire - Too funny. I didn't think anyone else would pick up on that, but I noticed it too when I was working on it and had it upside down
Cheers!
