Okay this is basically me trying to use the smudge tool with finger paint. This is the first Picture I've done in photoshop without scanning in some sketched line art.
I, though I try not to brag, really like the sky there, it turned out better than I had hoped for, but the valley doesn't look quite right, I'm thinking I should take the horizon down and put a little more direction the texture, then again I really don't know what I'm doing.
Anyway here's the pic, crit please.

Yeah, you should probably use dry brush to paint the trunk, because trunk is suppose to be hard.

Pretty cool. I did some pictures like this when I started with photoshop. A nice experiment and you can even get cool things you didnt expect.
But, there are other ways to paint too. Try using a paint brush with the opacity tool.. break the sky and tree down into about 4 shades and put them in. Then if you want use a smaller brush and add more shades.. THEN if you want use the smudge tool.
Or doing more like what you are doing you can turn down the opacity of smudge tool and slowly pull out the clouds (little by little) to get better gradiations.

Thanx for the posts! I think this will help me develope my technique a lot. I forgot to mention that I did this with a mouse, but It's probably apparent to you savvy artists.
Thanx again.
