ok I was playing around with some actions to automate the making of some tutorial images.
saving out steps has always been a bit of a pain for me, I don't know if anyone else has any smart and easy ways of doing it.

one Action I made creates a photoshop file and and pastes a smaller version of your image into it. everytime you activate the action it makes a new layer. then all ayou have to do is jump over to image ready and make the layers into frames, and you have a movie (fiddle with a few things like delay of frames etc. of course). this added about 10 min on to the whole paiting time, not all that much considering you get a movie out of it.
anyway this is what resulted. the image used is the third Gasmask pic I did.
kinda like what spooge did a few times with movies. (although his was better art of course http://dove.net.au/~jbrasted/tutorials/gas%20mask/stepsmov400.mov

Sorry, I know Quicktime isn't the best.

the second one I did was a bit complicated but it saved out a smaller version jpeg and psd of the image I was working on. the only way I could get this to work was to have it create a file and not name it anyhting. leaving it untitled_1. then pasting your progress into it. then it creates another file next time you want to save out (this time still leaving it un-named and thus Untitled_2) and pastes your current stage of progress. after that closing the Untitled_1 file. next time it will create an Untitled_3 and so on so forth. so at the end you have a whole bucha utititled files (get it to save a copy as jpeg and then save the actuil psd so that you can play with the file afterwards and not get screwed by compression, I didn't do this with the example below and it is pretty crap. I've learnt what to do now)
all these require you to be a bit careful not to have files besides the ones involved in the action open and to make sure you have the right file selected when activating it. but they worked without a hitch other than that. I'm going to save all of my images out in future, if something turns out good I can then make a movie out of it or something.
it would be good to see a few other people doing this as well if they want to do a tutorial. even if you don't write stuff it's still helpfull to look at the way people do things. not good for learning basic stuff but interesting nonetheless.

thanks Jezebel

I uploaded a bigger version of the image there, it's pretty big in terms of file size now, but the small one I had before was not giving enough information I feel.

Rinaldo -

This is really cool. It's always a good tool for learning, seeing how someone else approaches their work. I don't suppose you could post a more detailed explanation of how to do this eh? I would like to try to apply this to my own work.

Are you going to do a tut for that Goofy and Mickey Mouse film you keep emailing me clips of? The way Goofy grabs Mickey's ears is kinda disturbing, but great lighting effects. hehe

That looks tight Rinaldo, I'm glad you fleshed it out a little more, looks really nice from what I can tell. I'm getting bad compression on my end. I'll take a look at it on the DSL's at school

Keep it up, and I really like the way you're breaking it down. Very helpful.

I must agree. Rinaldo, you have grown and grown before our eyes. Why the hell am I standing still? Doh! I don't paint enough. Good work here. I love seeing how good artists put together paintings. Very helpful to many people too.

Zoso-Ill do an explanation for something better maybe. this has a lot of problems and was done rather quickly. Id like to work something up more if I do a big tutorial. I Plan to do a bigger and better pic along the same lines as this soon and I will save out the steps and if its good enough write something
Bubonic- no problem
Sock
Silber-its fun to do, I thought it would be a lot harder
EviLToYLeT-no prob
Plouffe- I usually use my wacom set to opacity. So the pressure defines the opacity.
Cos-thanks. The stuff youve been posting lately is really good as well.
I dont always do it this way sometimes I work with blocking style. But when I have trouble getting proportions right and this type of sketching helps me a lot. I dont always work in line but recently Ive been doing a little scribble to work out where everything goes.

bell_maker-its all Photoshop. I tried to take it into painter actually, but I failed again. Never had much luck with that app. Maybe when I get ver6. 5.5 just doesnt do it for me.

Skeezer-the bad compression is my fault. I double saved it. All sorted now. next time it will be nice and clear. I was doing this more to talk about how other people could do their own tuts as well.

Joachim-Thanks, you and Micke are my heroes ^_^ Its really encouraging to hear good comments from you.

Micke-see above

AliasMoze-thanks. I was impressed with the painting you have shown recently. Youve got a hang of a lot of things since you those paintings you posted a while ago.

I think I'll do this a bit more for a few different images. and if I work out better ways of doing things. it would be interesting to see other people do the same *hint hint *

Rinaldo (and others) - I'm trying to use sort of your coloring style (although it's hard to immitate it with a mouse).
So if I understood right you always begin with the dark tones (shadow) and work your way to the light (similar to oil painting)?

here's my contribution (in progress) for the gasmask thread...

thx in advance
