what's up? I've have worked as a graphic designer with emphasis on illustration for a few years now (actually too many years to still be sane) but I think the answer to your question is yes, film does use graphic artists, for things like overall identity, logo design, press kit collateral, etc, etc... as well as down to the nitty gritty stuff, such as the graphic design challenges seen within the film, i.e. the logo design of a company that the evil villain is trying to take over...
my advice would be to get your feet dirty at a smaller place, where you can learn the things you need to know for the graphic industry, such as print resolution, how colors lead and affect the viewer, typography, things like that.. Cause I have worked with some very huge clientele, and things is the business are very cutthroat. You really have to have a grasp of what you're doing to "wow" the big guys with the money!!!
And I guess this would apply to any field.. but someone with a moderate amount of experience will be eaten alive. (I've seen it happen)
So I imagine as big as some budgets are on films, that the best of the best are doing the graphic content work.
You could look to industry directories like, (Hollywood 411) I think thats the name, and it list names of agencies that do that specific kind of work, and you'll see that there are limited amounts of individuals doing the work...
And, if you choose not to go the learning and getting your feet wet route by taking work in a smaller place, you could try to look towards those agencies and go for the gusto..
As far as illustration, thats another monster in itself.. when I was in school I sounded just like you do, and I can tell you from experience, if you go this route, prepare for alot of work in your future... but by all means, do what you feel is right for you and the best of luck to ya.. |

Lmao, what a coincidence, I was at your site for the first time 5 minutes before I posted. I am just debating college/career choices and graphic design/advertisement design has always been an interest, beside concept illustration. Are graphic designes highly sought after for big firms? |

I was .. I worked for Tour Graphics [www.tourgraphics.com], a golf-gps-based company working on websites, logos, yardage books, scorecards and most graphics associated with golf. Some ads for magazines and trade shows too. A branch of that company was golfcourses.com, and i worked directly on that site plus web graphics. |

I'm a commercial and advertising artist (student) and graphics and web page layout designer for a local web hosting place.
After almost 1 and 1/4 of this I found out I hate commercial art. I HATE it. I plan on when I get my degree from this to go into law inforcement, business, or education. This is just too much my hobby, so when I go home sick of doing this kind of work I have nothing to relax with.
Trust me anything you need to really know about graphics design or advertising you can learn from these guys here... I've learned more from them then over a year in a class. |

Hi There!
I am a Senior Graphic Designer for a fare sized company although I was schooled as an illustrator. I make ads, web pages, Packaging, signage, banners and deal with a lot of Branding issues. It's pretty cool -but not what I want to do for the rest of my life. I don't know what you want to know specifically, but I would agree with what General Confusion Stated quote

My first job at a sign company helped me out alot even though I hated it. The positive thing was that I was able to do Illustration on the side and find out where I really want to go.

I learned Advertising Design and did it for 4 years in a silkscreen company.
The best things were the chicks that did the prints ...and the dark room was a great place to sleep early in the mornings.
About getting bored of it hmmm, not really, it had by far more variation than the game industry or web design, you work on a lot of mediums and for a lot of mediums, from pins to stickers, T-shirts, glasses, general local decoration ....endless list, it's also quite demanding.
The downsides are like Toast said, the color blind clients and (if you're a fan of it) the lack of fantasy or simply cooler stuff ...unless you have some rock band on the pipe.
It's just a matter of taste, if you don't like it, you get bored, sounds logical but i wouldn't say that it's a generally boring job.

i am a graphic artist, and it sucks ...
man, clients have such bad tastes ..,
and you have to deal with them coz they have the money; nothing much more to say..
In my opinion, motion graphic design or compositing are much more interesting than print, or webdesign
If you want to go for a graphic job, try to move in the motion territory; after effects, premiere and other video editing tools (flash too) are the keys to make you happy in the industry . I guess many graphics artists for cinema or tv ads work in that field.Maybe it s not exactly what you want to do but there are many similarities on the jobs.
Maybe you can work one year or two on print/webdesign but you'll get bored very fast
Any webdesigner will told you he s not planning to do that for the rest of his life ..so .. |
