i'm comin up with ideas for a big huge butt painting on a big huge butt canvas (36 x 28 inches). I want to do this very soon, mainly because i want to put it into my portfolio, which i should be getting together soon (it should have been done a long time ago, but i wasn't counting on applying to any schools for another year, after goin to community college for a semester, so i can bring up my grades and then transfer, since high school grades aren't included when transfering, since my accumulative GPA is 1.9. But i figure what the hey, why not just try to get in as is, and if it doesn't work, try again next year)
anyways... here's the pic

if that doesn't work (server down and such), you can find it by copying and pasting http://www.geocities.com/keith_patton_2000/thumbnails.jpg
i want to do this painting so that it's aeshtically pleasing (sp?), but i want it to show how well i draw figures AND backgrounds. so nice figures with a plain background is bad, and vice versa.
first thumbnail:
it's just a typical horse chase. I thought it'd be nice, cuz it shows the figure of both a person and a horse in action. Plus the splashing of the water would be nice. If i made the "ball and chain" thing... the ball part bigger with more foreshortening, it'd look pretty dynamic. The BG is kinda plain, although the water would look really nice if i get the splashes and reflections right.
i don't know about the composition, in my mind the figures were much smaller, and the ball was the closest thing. i don't think that'd be good though, cuz i don't want the ball to be the focal point, i want the rider getting chased to be the focal point.
i don't know if i'd like this, it was inspired by a LOTR scene, and i kinda feel like i'd be ripping it off.
second thumbnail:
i think i like this concept a lot...
there's just a chick sitting on a rock down by the stream. But, the BG could look BEAUTIFUL. The reflections of the trees in the stream, the rocks, the little mini waterfalls (i guess that's what they are), and the big waterfall in the far background behind the trees on the left side... it's a thumbnail, so i don't expect other people to see it like i do.
This would show my figures and my backgrounds, so i think i like this a lot.. but it'd be hard as heck... but that's not a bad thing.
third thumbnail:
i should just discard this one. I was just thinking of a knight on his horse. He's looking over the beautiful scenery... what kind of scenery, i don't know.
this would show figures and backgrounds too... but, eh.... i like the second one more
i also had another idea in my head. some fantasy lady (like an elf, although i could change it) observing a fantasy plant. The plant would have two parts of it. The top, shaped like a normal mushrom, has water coming off of it that falls down to the second part. This part is like an upside down mushroom... it keeps the water in there. Although it eventually overflows some, which would look nifty. The water filled up in this part would be kind of like a bird bath of sorts, so i could put some cool birds and such drinking from it.
But, a mushroom shaped thing shooting water up into the air would look like i had a sexual innuendo there.... which was not what i want to do.
i'm leaning towards the second one, but i still want others opinions on what they think would be good.
thanks |

Yes, well, I always like a picture that tells me a story, a work that adds something else besides the display of skills and techniques.
A lot of work is informal, a bit free of engagement. What is a knight riding a horse? Nothing more than a knight riding a horse. This is not a critique, more a stream of consciousness. I'm not offering a solution, and this comment isn't pointed towards you specifically, it's just that gripping the viewer is that extra pinch of pepper and salt. You don't have to express your political views or anything, heh, it's that the general girl-warrior-robot-knight-background... is just that. So a search for a good subject, and then painting that with all the stuff you've got, could be more interesting for a portfolio piece. Is it coincidence, or peer pressure, or imitation? Enrich the viewer with other things.
I wish I had the guts to attack such a big canvas! Looking forward to see the evolution of this project. |

yeah.. i see what you mean...
i'm thinking of doing the 2nd thumbnail, with a guy and a girl there and have a love theme.
I'm thinking of having the girl leaning towards the creek, pointing to a fish, and having the guy next to her, on his stomach, looking down at the fish.
or a frog, but a fish might look cooler...
i want the picture to have a calm content feel to it, happy people by the creek, lots of pretty coloros,...etc. Know what i mean? |

Bit of a Carl Larsson feel to it?
