Bet most of you can see how much courser a acrylic painted image looks like scanned, even at this low res. Yes, I was inspired todo something more "Bisley"like.
I just had to paint and make something "physical". I go just get this cravings a couple of times a year, after doing to much "unreal" digital stuff. Didn`t get as good as my last acrylic effort.

I'm sorry to have to say that Veb but I don't like them. I really don't like your composition. And I prefered the kind of color palette you used for your nomads or your girl with the panther. Those two are not the same quality. They seem awkward in some way.
And they could be more 'in your face' for that special Bisley feeling A little too tame right now.

That's how I feel. Don't mean to upset you.

I like these much. Excellent job. I have to say that the giant knockers on that chick would reduce her fighting prowess much, as they would get in the way. Even if they were supress, the size of them would still be a hinderance. Then again, maybe that's just my bias against big knockers, and amusement that most fantasy images with women are half naked.

I love the palette used, and can definately see some of the influences for this. Bravo.

First off... where the hell have you been?

Second, I think it is cool to see your work with other mediums. I agree with black_fish in that I like your digital work more, but I'm think these scans may have taken a little out of the quality of the pictures. They seem a little too bright to me.

Not sure if you want a critique or not. These are high quality no doubt but they have several things that turn me off instantly.

Primarily, I cant stand the solid neon-like colors.

The guy in the top one just doesnt fit and there is almost no use on most of the canvas space. This makes it look disjointed and not whole.

The second one is defintely better in most respects but the pure colors make it look cartoony and distracting. The red reflected light is way too strong and pure. Blacks could have been used to solidify the composition but the darks have also been poorly used.

The background also clashes and is distracting (check out Broms work for good use of backgrounds).

Hmm, also study Frazetta for good use of negative space and colors.

I'm being a bit harsh on these because they are so good in so many respects but are not really enjoyable due to the flaws.

A picture should be pleasing to look at first and then try to make it as right as possible.

those are beautiful pieces ... i guess everyone is entitled to an opinion black_fish... but you make it sound as if they're garbage? ... bust out some acrylics, lets see what you're capable of doing .. in the meantime... i love your style veb... do you draw those with pencil on the canvas before you paint them?

Great paintings, love the action in the skys. I think the girl's pose is great, love the action line. the leaping man seems to unballance the composition for me. I think it'd be stronger removing him entirely actually. You could crop in slightly and focus on her alone. Just an opinion, great painting regardless....

Well first off, these are not my best..I just had to paint!...I Even painted the first one on the backside of an older drawing since I lacked paper. They are very strong colors and the are definitly abit too bright, but then again...I wanted to do something different.

Yes, the guy in the first image does not "feel" right...But there`s only so much you can bother to fix after you`ve painted them.

when working with "real" mediums one should plan out the image alot more...something I forgot in this case;-) Guess all the digital work has taken away my edge:-(

I seems when you do something which is abit strong in one direction, people either love it or hate it. Very few I`ve shown these 2 are in the grey area.

But luckily the editor of conan is a avid Bisley and Horley fan, and since Bisley only made 2 conan paintings or so, and Horley does about 4 a year..there`s always room for more. But I`ll see what I can do with the brightness.

Bottom line..I kinda dislike the bottom one myself...wtf. did I do to the anatomy of the attackers...putting away Bisley books NOW!

Hi there, they're nice pics. Acrylic is much harder than digital for sure!

Anyway, I was wondering, does Simon Bisley have a website or online gallery? I've heard a lot about his work but I've never actually seen it.

Look, everyone, a girl with a large chest. Gosh, haven't we seen enough of that ?

I *do* like the picture, though - but the use of nudity is far to blatent and "slapped on". (look, a dragon. Let's have a nude girl next to it)

C'mon.

Jason N : This is a cool biz link too http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Shire/5701/

Veb : hey cool links u posted, havent seen this fakk work yet..

I like these pics you painted. You can see they're drawn straight
from your imagination which is what I like, even tho they're not
quite as proffesional looking as your usual stuff.

I think whats letting them down is the anatomy. Bizley's anatomy
is exaggerated but was always pretty correct. I think if you work
more on your anatomy your stuff would really improve alot.. Hope
you don't take this as a diss cause its not. Just thought I would
comment since I've loved bisleys work from the days he started
ABC Warriors. ( Even tho I think alot of his stuff nowadays has
gone downhill the lazy bugger )

I thought your headless horseman was class by the way

Cos...Fairly right I quess. Although I have seen 99% of all Bisleys stuff, and have 2 books, and soem prints, and must say...he has made ALOT of downright wrong anatomy,..it just kinda looks "right" to us now, because we dig him so much, and we don`t care..hehe. But it`s no excuse for me being sloppy though.
I`m paying more attention to that the next time;-) Although I`m not too unhappy about the babe in the first pic....but I was bored of just a babe with a sword and added a dude. It didn`t quite work as well as I hoped, but the editor of conan liked it anyway:-)

All the "bad" guys in the first pic more or less has anatomy that sucks, and I`m ashamed:-( It will be used for a rushed cover on a pocket book, with most of the bad cropped out, and whats left, will be covered in logos.

Hmm I think a lot of you people complaining about anatomy just think you know anatomy..personaly I don't see anyone else here who has posted doing absolute correct anatomy..anyways this is a fantasy painting and I look at the characters and they look perportional to me and the anatomy does not look bad at all. I have no idea what you poeple are talking about. Personaly I think you are looking for somehting to complain about...1 person says( ohh the anatomy ) then the rest of the sheep say the same thing..whatever....pisses me off..can't you people have your own opnion?????

transcendent: hahahaha

now, about the nudity in the first one. ...it just seems unnecessary and sort of ludicrous...it's really not wise to go around fighting topless. it HURTS. you could say ' she just didn't have time to put on her breastplate!' but...she had time to put everything else on. i think it would be a better piece overall if it were a little more plausible (i.e. if she was FULLY ARMOURED instead of PARTIALLY armoured.)

heh. forgot to say: i actually think the pieces are quite good, btw.

Veb...i agree with the general consensus about the anatomy in these 2 pics. They just seem off. However, I really dig the main guy in the 2nd picture. I think you painted him great, and he has a real presence. Looks damn awesome!

Hey Veb... I'm a really big fan of Bisley too. His Slaine art rules (and FAKK2 too!). He is actually my biggest influence (and also Corben, Wrightson, Frazetta)...
Right now I'm working in this picture:

I always wonder how people do such things with acrylics, maybe I should try it sometime...
I like the cool atmosphere in the second image and the breasts in the first one
uh...and the lighting of course!

Veb I have to mention that I like what you are doing! I'm a big fan of Biz amongst other fantasy artists of this kind.
In the time I've spent here I've seen a lot of your work and I think that you are falling into the same rut that I myself fall into some times. Some of you work looks like Boris some looks like Frezetta and this looks like Biz.
Myself I'm trying my best to brake out of this mold. What do you think Veb?
