Hey. ;} I did this for an anime forum a couple months ago. Photoshop. I tried, as you can see by the line drawing, to do it a bit like an anime style, but coloring it using the multi-layered shading like they do in their animation cells wasn't a style I could do very easily. I gave up and decided it was much more fun trying to get super realistic. Well, I'm happy with the pic, but I realize that the face is 1) not as attractive as the line drawing promised and 2) probably wasn't meant for '3d' rendering. So, yes, the face looks out of place to the rest of the style. But, I had a lot of fun with it. Hope you like it. Tell me what you think.

The color version:

Aaand, because I'm such a fan of doing details no one will every see...

Oh, and for this, because of the full view, I liked the feel the original pencils looked over the pic. It's not quite so effective close up, but it wasn't meant to be, yes?

Thanks. I'd love to hear opinions.

wow nice work. I like the third image that shows the detailing and i also like the line art. But i personnaly think the small version of the color on doesnt look good. Its as if it was meant to see all the details and closeup...

Whee, that is one hot image! Both the drawing and coloring is top notch. I was just following the lines and trying to visualize her position in a 3d perspective..... and I gotta tell ya. I'd really like to know how she's going to get outta there!

Wow, that looks great. I particularly love the rendering of the outfit and the hair. The blue lighting on the boots is great. Very cute character as well. I see by your post count that you're relatively new? If so then welcome to the forums. Post some more cool stuff.

i really like the subject and the pose. Very cool laser dodging. only crit. is the lines on the floor seem to mess up the perspective a little.

Or is the floor slanting down to the right?

Wow. I really like the picture. The hand you got painted there looks realistic as well. I'm amazed at the level of detail poured into it and I congratulate you. Nice style you got going there, it's a cross between anime and realism.

Very nice - I dig the line art a lot. I think the reason the floor looks tilted is that your two vanishing points are too close together - it increases the distortion towards the edge of the page.

The hand detail is outstanding.

ooh! eh! COOL

one crit. dont get mad ppl!

I just thought that perhaps her shadow on the floor is not realistic. It should be darker around and closer to where to body contacts the floor. Maybe then graduated outwards lighter.

Anyone agree?

thats too critical man.. Id say there are larger problems to worry about.. but you have a good eye though

I dont see the poinmt of all that detail when you compress it and resize into a jpeg and all that heaps cool quality is lost..

post a highres version
that would be kewl

What could i say? "Brillant" i think is appropriate.

Just a comment though, the line of the floor texture don't seem to fit in right.

Is there any way you can make her be eating a cheese burger? I'd like that.

It just seems to be missing two things, and if you were to incorporate these two things, the piece would feel complete:

  • A cheeseburger
  • Her eating it

Thanks. I know it seems unimportant now, but you should think of the future, and you might kick yourself when you look back on this oneday, and feel there is no way it can be a part of your portfolio, because you left out the all-important, "cheeseburger eating" part.

Oh, and one more thing... have her eating a cheeseburger (did I already mention that?)

Reminds me of some scenes with Catherine Zeta-Jones in the movie Entrapment.. yum
To nitpick, yea, the lasers look a little odd and the perspective of the floor too, but the picture looks great nevertheless!

Wow! What a response! And here I thought I was only going to have a few straglers. I've posted a wacom question in digital discussion, and only one person was kind enough to help at all.

But I open up my topic this morning, and woah!..17 posts. Cool. ;}

Letsee...answering questions:

Xcal: I'm not sure how she's going to get out of there. She had mentioned something about her disabling the alarms through the control panel on the jemcase, but not too many details on that. She was a little rushed...

-marty- and Francis: perhaps the lines are too warped from my focal points, but I kinda like it a bit extreme. ;} hmm. well. I'm not redoing it. ;} that's for sure!

Krazy: It took me probably about 20-30 hours. I was doing it after work for a few hours a night for about three weeks as I recall. It's about 8.5 x 11 at 300 resolution. Freggin' HUGE file, but I get to use it to my advantage if I ever want to print it out all nice and glossy. :}

Collosimo: ;} You're absolutely right. After blurring the darn thing, I didn't remember to do anything else to it. Thanks!

Freddio: I do all that detail in it so that when I print it out for portfolio, it's not pixelated. All my pictures have the ability to be print-ready, just in case I want to include them.

feebsaint: As long as it has extra mustard, ketchup and pickles. If you don't let me put extra pickles, we're going to have words, mister! ;}

Oh, and perhaps the lovely people in THIS forum can help me...should I get a wacom tablet? I have hand skills, and I'm decent with the mouse, imho. But though I hear wonderous things about a wacom, I read nothing but trouble about them in the forums. I'm thinking 12 x 12 so that I can also trace in my drawings both horiz and vert. And the 12 x 12 is the same price as the 9 x 12 without a mouse I'll never use. PLEASE post some opinions on this. It's a big investment. Thank you.

Wow, MereKat so you say you did this work with a mouse? If so, I say in answer to your wacom question, "Hell yeah you should get one! :>"

If this is how your work with the mouse looks, I can't WAIT to see the stuff you to with a tablet. I can't really tell you which one to get though because I just have a little graphire

Nice work, I love how you handled the lighting!

Don't know where you're hearing problems coming from about Wacom tablets but I can definitely, definitely say that buying a Wacom, as strapped for cash as I was back in school, was the best investment I've made...and I've never ever had problems with any of the two tablets I've had in these past three years (I upgraded about a year ago, got a 6x8). I couldn't imagine getting the workload I had in school done without that first tablet I got (one artist to four programmers working on an Action/RPG = many sleepless weeks ).

So, uhm, yeah, if you haven't figured out where I stand on getting a tablet...get one.

Great piece.
Like the colouring and the pose. I think the face looks okay with the body it gives it a distinctive style.
Do you have any favourite manga artists?

Great work. I love everything about it

But but but....

But, from the pencil her stomache area is one of the areas that stands out, makes here look angeliK. The rendering looses that, maybe a highlight along here stomache profile would bring it out of the background.

Well great in anycase, just my 2 cents.

Jezebel: thank you! I don't know if you remember me from your self-portrait thread, but I certainly remember you! We'll have to get together sometime and compare notes. I adored your skin tones and that purple fur you had wrapped around your coat. ;} You MUST let me in on some of your patented secrets...

Flinthawk: I think I just might be gettng that wacom...should prove interesting. ;} And here, through college I did it all the hard way...;}

Axl: Well, I'm not as well versed with that as I probably should be. My ALL time favorite is Yukito Kishiro, tho. He did Battle Angel Alita (Gunnm (sp?)), and I thoroughly loved his series. Other than that, I can't say there's anyone I drool over, or such. You?

Wyatt: I mulled over that question for a while before ending the piece. It was really dragging on in the end, and I just wanted it over. I liked the 'black-hole' quality of the pure black, so I opted for lazyness. But...yeah...probably should be the highlights, hunh? *grumble*...*sigh*...okay. ;} You win. If ever I am brave enough to open the 150meg file, I'll do it. ;} Good eye. ;}

Thanks everyone for your wonderful comments. ;}

Oh, and Krazy, I noticed you asked for what kinds of tools I used. Well, mostly the paintbrush with color dodge and multiply settings...but if enough people care to see it, I did a bit of a 'step by step' crossed with a tutorial for that other forum. I know that most here don't need such instruction, but if people here want to see it, I'll post it all. Just let me know. :}

As some people already have stated, both the pencils/line art is great, and so is the colored version.

This picture is all manner of funkadelic! Geeze... I skip the forum for a day and it's like missing New Years Eve...

I can see what you mean about the face, but only because I can pretend what it's like to be an artist that draws good anime-style faces :P I can't do them consistently at all, hehe.

But as for the face, I think the problem you perceive is a color shading one. I'm somewhere close to your color-shading skill I think, so that's my best gues and my best guess is that a harder shadow in some places on her face would fix the cuteness factor. This is just for future reference since I wouldn't touch this like you said

- harder-edged cast shadow from hair onto her right cheeks and brow. Carry the shadow over the eye too, shouldn't be all white
- deeper shading under front hair curl - maybe...
-harder-edged darker shadows under her left chin.

Other than those points which I may be imagining... some of the cuteness could be lost because it's not shaded like traditional cell-animation All that gradient shading may have an ephemeral effect on the pic.

I luv this pic!

eheh i hope she's disabling the alarm because if she tries to get back up at all that's what's going off. aside from that, really cool detail on the hand there
