I was sitting at my computer just now and had nothing to draw, so I drew the desk to the left of my monitor.
Any advice, crits?
I used a mouse so go easy on me, hehe

mmmmm...maybe I am mistaken, but you have overused some of Photoshop features. I mean, the basement looks like a Filters>Texturizer result. And the colours look too much like Dodge&Burn with some Saturate&Desaturate addition.
There's nothing against that if the goal is what was achieved, but in this case seems too obvious (even though I admit I maybe wrong).
The cylinder where the pencils are kept, casts shadows on the floor but not on the wall? I guess you should fix that.
I think it's a good start, and our sourrondings offer a good amount of things to paint! |

I agree with tayete. Those photoshop features are there for enhancing an image, not basing your entire image on. I understand that it takes more time, but it's a good idea to go about your photoshop paintings as you would a physical painting. Don't simply paint an area flat and dodge/burn it to make it appear round, use different hues, different tones, complementaries to dull.
Although I do not recommend using the texturizer as noticably as you used it, if you're gonna use it for a 3 dimensional surface, use some transformations to create perspective. Otherwise it will look like a vertical wall.
Also, I see a lot of "jaggies" (pixelated edges) throughout the image. Why is that?

Interesting and certainly not bad. But like the others say, the textures detract somewhat in places. It depends what you're going for I guess. I like the can in general.
Zoom in and smooth out those edges though.
Sax reeds by any chance? |

Hi vector,
I agree to others about using photoshop filters in a painting. Your table texture is totaly out of perspective, which makes it look like a vertical wall, as mentioned by Totally.
The Can is wrong: Don't forget that round shapes become elliptical in perspecive, it shouldn't have corners, as in your painting.
There're some other things to improve, but you should practice the basic shapes at first, and stop using photoshop textures. Don't paint the textures when its to hard in the beginning, but try to capture the differences in hue/tone on the ground. |

thanks for the advice everyone!
yes I did overuse photoshop's features.
I guess I was lazy and just added some textures instead of painting.
tayete - There is actually a space between the desk and the wall, I'm not sure how I can achieve this effect (?)
Totally - This is my second attempt, so I just started using dodge and burn, following the tutorial on this site - do you have and tips on colouring without dodge/burn?
Also it is pixelated because I drew it in this size, haha. I wasn't going to keep it at first, just messing around doodling.
Muzman - It's a clarinet reed
morphgfx - thanks for the crit! I see now how the cylinder shape is wrong, I'll work on that.
--------
I'll keep practicing, and hopefully getting a wacom will improve my painting a great deal.
Drawing with a mouse sucks.
