Gosh, I should never look at Enayla's newest stuff before posting. I get the feeling that this is so...in need of help. Well, I guess the only thing I can do is keep at it. The character I drew this time is Ramsus from Xenogears...I drew him in his elemental outfit, not in the uniform he wears later. Please point out anything that's bugging you. Some of the pictures I used as references are included below.

(edit) My server decided to disallow offsite linking *grrr*. Does anyone know of a host that will allow me to? Found one.(/edit)

I finally found a host that allows me to display pictures...I know I did this picture quite some time ago, but I'm guessing very few of you saw it (due to my messed up host). So, here it is again hopefully you can see it now. |

I beat Xenogear (which was so freakin hard I had a nose bleed once) and I love the game and the mechs and the characters and Ramsus is one of my favorite character. All I got to say about your work is that......MY GOD YOU RUINED HIM! Where is his powerful and noble appearance? Where is the gloriy??!!!!
ahem, sorry, just going crazy there. Anyways, I guess I'm not in the position to crit your work since I can't even do that. Like you said, keep at it. and maybe you should look at his face for a really long time so you know what to draw.
Can you draw Elly? |

Looks sweet, the backgrounds looks superimposed tho, maybe the colour doesnt fit. Also areas of the face look flat like the forehead, casting some shadows from his hair and other areas might help it. |

Fate, hmm....well I've always thought of Ramsus as one messed up guy, I don't know about his power or nobility he's just an antagonist with issues (but I couldn't help felling sorry for him). Thanks Cos and Lomi for the constructive criticism ^_^. I'll have to see about adding some shadows from the hair and defining his nose and mouth more, though I'm kind of wondering how I'll go about further defining those features (any suggestions?). And about the background not fitting, I'm really not sure what to do to make character look more natural in it (any ideas)?

Good job, the only critique I could make is his mouth and nose don't look very defined, they blend in with the rest of the face too much, try defining them more and the picture will look alot nicer . |

Nice, pretty good, I would say you dont have much further to go to get to Enayla's sort of level, although bear in mind you never will, and nobody else can be like her. You'll get to your own distinctive type of art, and we'll love your for it because variety is the spice of life. Of course learning from other good artists is ok. Bear in mind that Enayla probably said once 'I wish I was as good as that'... (She still does I would say)
Even ppl like her or even Spooge are always looking to improve, its never ending..
In terms of making the character look more realistic you need to focus on a few things.
Texture: Skin has texture atm you may be trying to emulate a smooth look... (perhaps like Enayla?) Skin should have some sort of texture, nobody is perfect.
Rendering: Your light and shadows need IMO a larger tonal range. I would say that your current lighting situation is very 'diffuse' meaning that because of a large amount of atmospheric light, your character appears to be studio lit from many directions. Define your light source a bit more, and you will find that the tonal range will need to be more defined and manipulated. I think that someone said it looked superimposed upon the background, well that is exactly what the character lighting is doing, it is not representing the surrounding environment, and that makes it look different, stuck on, and superimposed.
Keep in mind also that beyond skin, the other parts of the character need the same treatment, atm the hair is flat because it is bright the whole way through. This is a direct result of your 'diffuse' lighting. Consider that for example Enayla's hair often has a large range of tones. Light to dark and also Hue variation is what makes her hair look exciting and 3-Dimensional.
Oh yeah that ear looks a bit strange...
Hope that helps.. |
