Hey, everyone! Last weekend I took a trip down to Gary, Indiana, where I took lots of photos of some wonderful decrepit abandoned factories. I've put some of the photos on my web page, in two galleries:
www.waylon-art.com/cgi-bin/loader.cgi?9
www.waylon-art.com/cgi-bin/loader.cgi?10

Here's one of the images (actually, the first I took)

Enjoy!

Hey, great photos, I love your industrial photography. I saw your old stuff as well, I wish I had that much stuff to take pictures of over here. But they tear most of the stuff down after a year or two.

BTW, I wanted to ask you that for a while but never got around to emailing you, any photography boards where you post your stuff ? I occasionally do industrial photography as well, I'm fascinated by the abandoned factories and the like.(Recently had the chance to photograph a huge abandoned Soviet army base) I'd like to show the stuff to people but I don't really know where to post it.

Thanks, waylon.

I've gotten a lot of reference mileage out of the abandoned plant series you posted a year or so ago and I'm sure I'll get good mileage with these as well.

Much appreciated!

Hey everyone, glad you like the pics. I just got back the negatives I took - I'll post them when I get them scanned.

Sktizox - heh, no, I didn't get mugged or shot. I did get stopped by paranoid security guards, who called the cops, who confiscated one roll of film, but that's ok, it didn't have anything good on it anyway.

Fabrys - If you want to use these photos for anything non-profit, go ahead.

horstenpeter - No, I haven't really found any photography boards I like. Haven't looked much though. Do you have those army base pictures online somewhere? I'd like to see them....

tyron - heh, no, I didn't add the smiley. It really was painted on the building. Underneath, I believe, was written "Have a safe workplace". It was... creepy.

Cool pics. I think I'll forward this to some of my coworkers.
They would also make good reference if you like that kind of subjects.

My only qualm with the pictures is that most of them seem to look more like backgrounds. I think the composition of a lot of them could be more dynamic if you tried to do more with fore/background, diagonals or contrasting colors.
I also would have liked to see some more details.. A rusty bolt here a glowing piece of uranium there...

waylon, I don't have a site yet. There's not much left of those pictures anyways. I came there ill-equipped (was actually there for a seminar unaware of the huge base complex there) and I only found out later that my camera had broken while I was there. So out of the 70 pictures or so I took only these came out in a way that I`m not totally embarassed to show them: (I hope you don't mind that I post them in your thread). I'll definitely go there again in the summer (it's near Berlin)....once my camera is back from repairs.

[edit]By the way, eBoy, your stuff is very good, too ![/edit]

Hey everyone, it's nice to get such an enthousiastic response. I've got my 35mm negatives half scanned... looks like I'll have them up later in the week.

edraket - yeah, I know what you're saying, the composition IS a bit dull. My purpose in taking these was more documentary than artistic... I wanted to capture exactly what the place looked like for future reference material, even if that meant some of the shots might be a bit dry. Some of the shots with my 35mm are a bit more dynamic. (though just a bit. )

eboy - Good stuff! Man, this shit is addictive....

horstenpeter - Ditto. Great pics. I really like the third one... quite creepy.

Wow! Yeah, this kind of stuff really wets the... mouth. I took some shots of a collapsing array in Silverthorn, CO.

Great pics, everyone!

Thank you waylon !
I would use your pics to draw scenes, actually not to use your photos.
It could be integrated in a french comic book which I'm working on. So, I don't know if that's the commercial way you say.
Anyway, I'll contact you through your site when it'll happen.
horstenpeter : your pics remind me some places around Berlin and Potsdam. Where do you live in Germany ?

PS : I'm looking for pics of sewers.

wow, excellent, i adore the photos you took. i'm completely enamored with dilapidated buildings, factories, mines. living out in utah, there's many abandoned mines and ghost towns to poke around in, and your photos gave me that same awesome creepy vertigo feeling i get while exploring.

Isn't Michael Jackson from Gary, Indiana?

I hope so. That smiley face would have been a great background for the Beat It video.
