Haven't drawn any people apart from some silhouettes in landscapes for ages. Thought I'd try to see if I can apply some things I've learned from architectural drawing to faces. I ended up trying an approach quite different from what I've done usually. Very... kitschy, in a 90's way. I'll try not to make it a habit.
I went too far with this first one, and didn't really get the likeness that well, either:
this unfinished phase was more interesting
I meant to not render this one that much, but I went a bit overboard again. More successful, though.
It's a fun and quick way to paint, but the results are not necessarily my thing. |

Hello Sijun fellows,
after 4 years break, I come back here with greater determination. Because I understood there is nothing to do except to be concept artist!
well, to start on rough road, i start to experiment with brushes, techniques while creating selfportraits. of course im doing also other stuffs.
I dont know if it is worth to make the thread sticky if there is no activity in the thread.
see u at next time
best cheers

I think that's partly the reason for making it sticky. If the thread is hard to find (even for those looking for it), more likely someone will start a duplicate?
My two cents. |

Awesome portraits Tomasis - got me working on one of my own (it'll be a photograph by the time I'm finished, lol). Thanks for the inspiration. |

Found this (below) half way through (when "photographic" and *stale* was setting in); dumped the overdone version and reworked an earlier draft. Third light didn't help (front left) but too dim without it. Still wooden but learned a few things - onward.

durgldeep, thank you
regarding painting a selfportrait, i dont think it is possible to make it full of life if you copy from a photo, at most cases anyway. I think you have really good pen control so I suggest to start paint from life, learn how light works, focus more on working with values. also it is fun. much more fun than those boring zombie copying from photos even I do it sometimes. it depends how you do it or rather how you see and think. mostly it is 99% thinking and 1% painting, especially at early stadium of work. good luck!
now to my sp, did cut all hair off. feels good

Thanks for the notes/advice. If mine looks like an overpaint (it's from life/mirror), I'll be very happy. Usually I dislike/avoid references (encouraged by The Bone Doctor, "draw from imagination"); this has been different/interesting.
I fiddled with the lighting (for better or worse); both sources, left and right, were equally bright so I had to choose which side to emphasize while painting. The largest/'brightest' highlight was upper right forehead; I ignored that and changed the focus to the nose... Without the third light (as mentioned) there would be no highlight in the eye - but I see by your latest (all of them, really) that those details aren't necessarily the point (re focus on values).
Re "full of life", maybe that's an advanced concern that I shouldn't worry about yet (but do). Definitely I'm an amateur (unschooled) and I always appreciate advice. Thanks again.
[sorry all for the all-text post]

durgldeep, ok. try with one light and use large strokes as possible. Ie make things simple as possible and start build up from ground. lets say max one hour, start over again. do drawings also too (i did a lot drawings from Bridgman and Hogarth books, it helped me to get more fluid strokes). I check your other threads, you have sense of humor, hehe. The Bone Doctor works are really awesome.
sorry no pic at the moment |

Tomasis, I appreciate all your advice (including taking the time to write it). Might be a while before I return to this, though inspiration could strike at any moment (again).
Glad you found the other threads, where one of my aims is to lighten up, yep (and get others to join in; a point that might be buried in the text/ramblings). When seriousness happens (as it has here), I'll go with that too. |

micke, tack! which work are you thinking of, regarding custom brush question? For the last work, I did use flat brushes horizontal and vertical.
Btw I love your works. I try learn a bit of graffiti
zxcvjpc, welcome I look forward for your progress.
For preparation for oil painting, I did use Molotow pen and mixed with water. Looks fun. Got inspired by a french artist who did use that technique.
Do I look like a sad version of Durgledeep? haha

LOL - I almost mentioned the resemblance when I first posted here.
Didn't trust myself enough to say. |

durgldeep,
found the file somewhere. I'm so unorganized in harddrives (I install so many OS and often)..I believe the sp was done a few months ago, it is nice to find it like as a forgotten 10$ in random jacket. Too bad I dont remember what brushes, I'd like to know. arghh
