Hello !
uff After about 20 hours of work i finaly finished. Im happy with the result cause after being member for about 4 Years this is my very first finished artwork where i had to spend more then 5 hours. I used a photo i found over CORBIN as reference. The aim was photorealistic look.
a short tut:
First i sketched the basic shapes of the ship. I used a custombrush to quickly achieve a texture look on which i painted over. I painted at a resolution of about 3000 x 3000 px which is too small i noticed. But anyway i worked on. On a separate layer i painted along with only a hard round brush. For the Explosion i used 4 layer with different layeroptions. I tried the smudge tool ( after ignoring him for years ) but its not a tool i could work well.
here is a first step. As you can see ... just a quick blocking. One brush ( i used multiply etc. just to get some differetn colors )
This was my first layer. i used the eraser to get a clean age and than i worked on different layers.
and here the final:

I like it! But am compelled to crit as the image is good enough to withstand it so to speak.
Can I ask weather you used reference?
Because it's very well rendered and I really like the tense atmosphere. I can almost feel the shockwave from the plast and hear the sound *KRAKK*
The highlight on the (anker)chains and on the deck are lovely too.
If you did use ref:
I'd love to see some extreme highlights hit the deck and the towers even if it wasn't correct. I'd love to see YOUR interpretaion of this image. Or of this type of image.
If oyu didn't: Well shame on me.
I don't hope I come across too harshly.
Keep up the good work 'cause I like it!

LOL so THIS was what you were talking about!!??
very very very nicelly done!
some crits: I like how u starte the image out, and I dunno if I'm right about this, but maybe next time you can start with an even darker shape and work from more dark to light?
I often have the problem of making things look like they're made of a different material, I mean I leave stuff to be just as shiny everywhere, like it all was made of one material,
try thinking of getting different glossyness to different things, in this picture erverything seems like it's the same in shinyness and color, and maybe it is, I dunno what this kind of ship is made of and what color it has for real, but maybe u understand what I mean? for example the chains are very glossy, maybe create some variation there?
hmm cant think of any other crits but this is very nice! keep it up! |

beyond impressive, but i think too that you could have shaped the dark global basic silhouette of the ship, with more brighter or 'readable' surfaces : i really think the big fireshot makes enough light to draw the entire ship (here your little chains take a lot of the light, and the fence does not a lot) ; a lot of little pieces everywhere could have bright white hilights, like the antennas on the top of the ship, it would rise the 'flash' effect, like a photo.
but who am i to speak ; overall this piece is amazingly amazing, the fire smoke is between perfect and too perfect, the angle is really cool. impressive. :) _________________ l'angle b |

The latest stuff here in sijun is just amazing and this is a very cool picture.
I agree with Capt.Flush thou and especially on the chain to the left which is very bright while at the same time the floor is very dark (Can you say floor on a ship?). But anyway that is just a thought since I obviusly cant paint like that myself.
Also Capt.Flush, I mentioned something about Highlights sometime to you and I kind meant the stuff you talked about with the same white highlights everywhere, but hmm what do I know, just thought I was gonna explain that further.
But how is it -if it is a rainy day with the ship above, that would make the highlights very bright, wouldnt it?
ok enough of me rambling around.
Very nice picture, keep it up - See
see you. :)

thx for your crits !
@Capt.FlushGarden:
Thx ... yeah thats the one. Well it could turn out better but i guess after seeing this pic for so long time its just normal to be sick of it.
@bengal: thx, too. I think my problem is just that i dont trust on my own skill. So for eg. where to put some more highlights. extremer blending and whatever. But i promise i work on it!
@ matthew: thx ... its time for some more speedys ! |
