The important word in Ableton Live is the second one, "Live". That's it's main usage...it's hotkey heaven. Every keyboard key does something or can be made to do something.
More on the live performance idea it has a feature to delay the keys you press until the next bar... so if you press the key assigned to "saw synth" to play it, it'll not play right away until the end of the bar so that it's on beat... same thing applies to when you drag in new loops.
Whereas ACID had an extremely simple interface of just "painting" loops around...
The Ableton Live interface is truely insane and not that fun to work with.
I have no clue about it's effects routing capabilities. I do believe it supports VST plugins aswell as provides a few effects of it's own.
I didn't find it too useful or intuitive for programming music (instead of playing it on a midi keyboard) as I prefer to do. |

Live seems to be the latest favorite among electronic musicians who aren't as into traditional compositional structures. The most prized feature is to be able to shuffle all your clips/loops around in any order, in realtime. Traditional styled composers really don't have much use for something like that.
Many have complained that Live's MIDI editing is not up to par, compared to full-blown hosts like Sonar, Cubase SX, Logic, MOTU DP..etc.
So I guess if you do hip-hop, trance, and other type of loop/clip styled music, Live will make you very happy, but if you compose anything that uses progressing melodies, complex, progressive arrangements, harmonies..etc, then you won't find it too useful.
You can go to http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/index.php and read up all about it, including user feedback, debates, and flamewars about Live. Just go to the Host forum and you're bound to see some. |

Interesting and well received feedback, y'all - thanks! I've been wondering how this app stacks up against the rest, but I'm anything but qualified to make a real assessment; my experience with this stuff is severely limited (I've only tooled with Acid in the past). I do like the whole ambient/trance stuff, and I'm all about sampling, so maybe I'll play with this some, as Sonar seems a bit overwhelming. _________________ - Tom Carter

If you're into the whole ambient and sampling front, you might want to see if balistic replies. He uses Orion Platinum, by Synapse. It's a great app, but a bit unstable on my machine, which is a shame.
You'd do well to look on the KVR forums as Luna suggestive. It's a vast forum, with threads quickly going off the pages, but not in a bad way. People are quite friendly, but as with all places a mixed bag and many opinions biased towards the apps that people use.
I've played around with Live, but I missed alot of the MIDI editing functionality of other apps. It's a great app though. Just depends what kind of balance you want to get between MIDI editing with VSTs/Samplers and live recorded material. |
