Background: Escape Velocity: Nova is the latest instalment of long running series of games from Ambrosia Software. As you'll see from their website 'EVN' (as it's referred to) is an old-school, top-down, sci-fi, arcade, Elite-style RPG, which has its roots in early Mac gaming (don't laugh ). But with the latest version, Escape Velocity has gone cross-platform with a full featured Windows port. As with all incarnations of the Escape Velocity engine, it supports plug-ins which allow games developers to over-write the original game content, and weave their own stories along-side or in-place of the hard-coded game.
There are currently a large number of mods in production for EVN, but one of the most anticipated and well respected by the Ambrosia community, is Aftermath; a sequel to EVN its self. The Aftermath team consists of 14 individuals; coders, graphic artists and writers (including one of the writers of the original game). They are spread out around the world and have been brought together through their love of the Escape Velocity series, and the awesome potential they see in the Aftermath mod. None of them are paid for this work, and aren't likely to either. They see it as a labour of love.
The Aftermath Team are currently looking for a matte artist to swell their number. A large portion of the graphic work that will go into Aftermath consists of landscape imagery. This is currently being produced by one of their artists through Terragen to an exacting standard. But they now need to start adding to these works of art - and Terragen doesn't support the kinds of additions that the team requires. As a result, they are looking for a talented individual to work into these images and create another level of detail on top of the marvellous vistas they have already.
Are you a matte artist?
Do you like the way this project looks?
Do you have some free time on your hands?
Are you looking for a project you can fit in around others work that'll look great on your CV?
If your answer is 'yes', drop the Aftermath team-leader, Nick Anderson, an email at [email protected] and we'll get talking!
Thanks for your time!
Paul Evans
