Most web hosts have a certain bandwitdh ...
ok lets say ....... if a million people visit a certain website, the webmaster might not be able to pay for the overload of connections, and has to shut down.. (or something like that)
lets say a forum was set up .. much like sijun. would the size of the images posted have any effect on the main server it self, considering all the images were linked from elsewhere ?
I'm asking because i know of a digital art forum that limits your posts to 600 pixels. Their reason : lack of funding ...
will it really cost the webmaster of a forum more money if people loaded bigger pictures ? |

Bigger images use more bandwidth, hence cost more money.
However, if an image is linked from a second server, the bandwidth used to display the image is used by the second server, not the server with the link... so, for example, the sijun forum uses its bandwidth just for ASCII text, since the images displayed all come from its member's servers.
Pretty sure that's the way it works...

I believe in most cases, that sort of limitation is set up to favor people with slow connections... Unless the images are being uploaded to their server before being displayed, it shouldn't have an appreciable effect on their bandwidth usage... _________________ HonePie.com

eyewoo's right: the bandwidth is used from the server where the image is, not the link.
Some forums these days (I'm thinking cgtalk in particular) lets you attach the images WITH the post, and in that case the bandwidth is used from the forum server. _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |

ah .. k ...
im not part of CGtalk ... altho i do surf it ever so often... but when you say "LETS" you attach the images, does that mean they have an option that allows you to attach an image if you choose to ? ... or is it automatic.
and what if the forum uses basic BBCodes tags ? like*[img]www.hello.com/image1.gif[/img]* that would mean the images are taken from elsewhere right. |

thats right the [img] tag means that the image u want to attach to the code must be living somewhere on the web
when attaching an image to the post using the forum code, the owner/moderator of the site will give a maximum size for the image - ie 200kb this means that any message u want to attach to the post using the forum rules must be 200kb or less for it to be attached |
