Okay, so this is old news (the game is from 2004), but I've just come across it and it impressed:

http://jayisgames.com/archives/2005/08/cave_story.php

Young Japanese guy spent five years on it. Did all the code, art, animation, music, maps, and story, and then released it for free.

It's remarkably deep. Multiple endings, variable story based on your actions, varied and well-crafted gameplay.

If you liked the old NES Megaman style platform games, I recommend.

I never finished it. Last thing I remember was some bossfight. Good game, but I rarely finish em lately it seems. Lately being the last few years.

There are three endings in the game, and so three "boss" type bits.

The first was fairly easy, and gives you the "bad" ending (everyone dies except you and the green haired guy). The second was very hard, and gives you the "normal" ending (you and all the humans survive, but everyone on the island dies). And the third, the "secret" ending, where everyone survives, well I've been trying to beat it for longer than it took to get to this final part of the game. Surprised I'm slowly making progress.

That's what happens when you grow up and have to make money n' stuff. Smile

Seriously, I'm the same way. I find I LOVE the concept of games, but every time I sit and play for more than an hour, I feel like I've completely wasted time I should be working. Saturday night I played "Metroid Corruption" (which is quickly becoming my favorite game of all time) the first time since I bought the damn thing. An hour and a half later I looked up and I couldn't believe how long I'd been playing

...uhm...yeah...that's the reason!

Seriously though, I'm not sure why I don't play games so much anymore. I did finish Pikmin a bit ago and I was at it for hours and couldn't stop, but most of the time I can't get myself to start up a game or stay at it for long, except maybe turn on my DS for a while.

One game I am actually really looking forward is LostWinds on Wiiware though. That'll be one I'll buy and play through fast most probably. Not really hard with about 3 hours or so though. Smile

Personally I just find most games too damn boring to be worth the effort. Some are good still, mainly ones that focus more on creating a vivid, nuanced world, but games that just focus on action and getting things done get repetitive way too fast for me.

So I just finished LostWinds. Bought it yesterday, the european WiiWare start. Took me longer than the 3 hours I read it would, but I'm a bit retarded sometimes when it comes to knowing where to go next and where I have already been.

Apart from a few minor things I do have to agree with all those positive reviews I read and have to say that any Wii owner should get this title. Hopefully plenty of people will buy and the next episode is out soon. I sure look forward to it. If just more Wii games would have this quality and appeal.

Also I'm much more tempted now after LostWinds to get Zack and Wiki. Probably going to buy it soon, even if I thought I'd wait for a pricecut or my birthday.

gLitter-

You should give "Boom Blox" a try, too. It's a very inventive and highly-replayable puzzle game.

I'm going to say that the days of the FPS are numbered. They are this generation's fighting game that is similarly running out of steam and original ideas.

My money for the future are the cheaper, smaller games like Portal and WiiWare/XBL/PSN games.

I don't think the genre is going anywhere, but hopefully we get more nuanced experiences with more storytelling and elements like that (Mass Effect, wink wink) Razz

I bought Call of Duty 4 yesterday. And played through Call of Duty 4 yesterday. Okay, so it wasn't very long, but it looks like it'll have good replay value.

And it was great. As good as any game I've ever played.

When it was originally anounced that Boom Blox was Spielberg's secret game I was like wtf. But once the reviews and impressions poured in I was geniunely interested. Nearly bought it release day actually, but then I thought of Zack and Wiki and got indecisive again.

Maybe with birthday coming up I'll finally get some of those games I want but don't want to buy. Razz
