A little backstory-
A guy that is on another forum of mine always writes in with these really wacky stories that I always thought were bullshit. Until now I've never been able to prove it. Check out this whopper he posted and what I found while checking his facts. I'm posting here for all fellow sijuners amusement.
This originally bothered me because he is obviously looking for sympathy through a lie. The truth is a kinda different picture, huh?
(his message)
Well you can say what you want, but training and family traditions win out.
To date, we have found my sister, who like all of us in our younger years, followed her family teachings instead of Civilization.
She never really liked the camping, animal trapping and cleaning, she never even likd to fish, yet, today she is more than thankful for such a childhood.
Instead of heading INTO the city after everything went to pot, she gathered specific items and headed into the forest. Eventually she made it to the river upstream of the polluted waters where she had fresh water and fished and such, until about day 5 when every thing started getting straightened out. She then caught a ride out of the area to a phone where she got into contact with our other sister who lives in Western Louisiana. Sister #2 the youngest, when and picked up her older sister, she is now safe with family.
So, civilization can take a potty trip. People were sitting there starving WAITING for some one to help them, when a Vast majority could have (IF They had known how), could have provided for themselves simply by being self reliant.
Still no news of my Brothers ex-wife and is daughter (My niece) who was visiting Mommy when it all happened. Unfortunately, she was raised by the Christian (Civilized) Side of the family, so does not know the blunt side from the sharp side of a knife, let alone how to start a fire using a fire bow or wood friction.
So much for Civilized man. I will stay primitive if you do not mind
On her way out of the city she said she had an idea and so made a stop at the Zoo, it may sound inhumane to some, but better as she said, to stock up on fresh meat, than to let them stay there in cages dying, many had already drowned she said.
Once out, she dried and smoked what she had gathered, so managed to stay, fed and with fresh water for 5 days, until she could get out. A bit ragged since she could not remember how to fashion a lento, but alive and whole.
It makes me wonder why no one else thought of that? I mean, With so much meat on the hoof and wing sitting there at the zoo, why so many starved? Have we become that Civilized that we would rather starve, than get a little animal blood on our hands?
Anyway, one episode is ended on a positive note, now we wait to see if we hear of anything from the other

New Orleans zoo animals survive Katrina's wrath

By Mark Babineck
NEW ORLEANS, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Thousands of people are feared dead in the rubble of storm-shattered New Orleans, but at the New Orleans zoo only three of its 1,400 animals died in the wrath of Hurricane Katrina.
The famous Audubon Zoo has the good fortune of being located on some of the city's highest ground, but it also had a disaster plan for the animals that worked better than the city's plan for humans.
It suffered no serious flooding, but the storm's fierce winds toppled several large trees and knocked down branches throughout the 52-acre (21-hectare) grounds.
The only fatalities so far were two otters and a raccoon, zoo curator Dan Maloney said on Sunday.
He said the zoo had planned for years for the catastrophic storm that has long been predicted for New Orleans, which is mostly below sea level and almost surrounded by water.
"We're on our own here and we know we're on our own," said Maloney, who has begun calling the zoo Camp Katrina. "We tried to plan for what's impossible to plan for."
While many human storm victims had no water or food, the zoo laid in enough provisions to keep its animals alive for days.
The storm provided additional food by stripping from the trees huge amounts of leaves, which were mixed in with other food to extend provisions.
A few items -- hay, crickets and mealworms -- have been restocked by a convoy from Baton Rouge, Maloney said.
Fourteen staffers stayed at the zoo to care for the animals throughout the storm and the aftermath that has left New Orleans in ruins.
They said the biggest problems now are the low-flying helicopters buzzing around the city to rescue people and transport them to safety. The sight of them and the noise scares the animals, said assistant curator Rick Dietz.
"The hoof stock start to run around. We don't want them to run into a fence and break their necks," he said.
They have sent out a request that choppers either not fly over the zoo, which is in the city's Garden District, or stay at least 1,500 feet (450 metres) above it.
Maloney said the human suffering and death outside the zoo's fence was a terrible tragedy, but he was grateful he and his staff managed to save the helpless creatures on the inside.
"We stayed here because the animals can't leave," he said. "We were almost done with our ark and were training the animals to march in two-by-two, but we just didn't make it."

Not a friend of mine, just a wacky dude on another forum. Since you asked, here's the email I got after posting my "retort" on the forum. The guy has a reputation on the board as being a condescending know-it-all, so it was my greatest pleasure to prove he was a big fat liar.
His emailed response (in which he changed his story from his post)-
"Yes, as I said, she said some were drowned, but she is a soft hearted person, so went for the fowl as they were more like chickens I think. Also the updated news also verified that one or 2 craines were missing as well. Which I can about figure out where they went too
I will have ot ask her what she actuall took. I would figure knowing her, it was probably fish or something like that. heck, when we were children we even ate crows, so she may have simply hit up some of the local nesting fowls that are always around. I was so relieved that she was safe with my other sister, that I never bothered to get full details, just a brief description.
to make it wirse, most of my family is ocmpletly computer illeterate. You heard of people asking how much the airlift would cost if they got on the helicopters? I hate to say it, but I would not have been surprised if any of my family had been there, I am sure they would have asked that. .-)
talk about country, my brother just recently got a TV and when I ask him about a computer, his comments were, "Computers are the devils servants, all they promote or do is pornography and promots killing". Tells you how computer literate some of my family is.
they are the type that you see after a disaster on the news, wearing curlers and pink moomoos on their feet, going, YAR thar was tha jhonsons haus flyin uver da roof and all i coud thin was she had my cassarole dish.
When I called my brother asked whyt king of "Fuuny" accent I had. I explained I had no accent due to so many different languages any more. HE had the accent
that is my Kin, my Bood, me family "
I was going to email back and point out the fact that the workers that remained at the zoo would probably not let his sister come in and eat two cranes, but I just as soon not waste the time emailing this idiot. |

Well, at least he's not out there being a serial killer. Harmless weirdos are nothing much to worry about. |
