Yeah, that was the news here up in Scandinavia some years ago. We heard researchers of all sides and nothing came of it. If I remember the latest consensus amongst researchers was that you need to eat approximately 700kg potatochips in a day to accumulate enough acrylamid to be any health hazard.
In the other hand potatochips and fries aren't very good for you, acrylamids or not. |

It's pretty much common sense, like how eating McDonald's couldn't kill you unless you're determined enough to sue them. _________________ Derelict Studios|Godwin's Space |

You can probably get cancer by just breathing the polluted air we have these days.. It also depends who is funding the research. French scientists find new reasons why wine is so damn healthy every now and then.
My motto is: "eat healthily and die in a car crash", you can't play it safe, no matter what you do in life. |

Potato chip radiation is scary to people because they can't see it. It may help to remind yourself that it's all just potatoes. French fries, tater tots, hash browns . . . all made of the same stuff as potato chips. Because potatoes have very little mass, this kind of radiation has to be very high in intensity before it stands much chance of doing you harm (a scalloped potato casserole, basically).
Also, while it's true that we have more potato-transmitting devices these days, they are all spread out across different bands of the hunger. The snacks have to be, or our appetites would interfere with each other. If we were dumping all that starch into only a narrow band of intestines, then we would have more cause to worry.
And remember that potato radiation is completely different from the kind of radiation that beefy materials emit. Particles like cheeseburgers are much more dangerous than potatoes because they have more mass, and can more easily knock chunks out of your DNA, causting mutation and sickness.
This is the kind of radiation that will increase when the Earth's potato field is in the process of inverting, which will probably happen sometime in the next ten thousand years (it is already growing unstable). Without a potato field to protect us, the worst-case scenario would be a 2-5% increase in cancer rates, which is certainly bad, but not civilization ending.
As others have said, sitting in a chair all day and using a mouse all the time are bigger health problems than the potato fields of your consumer deep-frying equipment. _________________ QED, sort of. |

i also hear there is a hole in the potato field growing above idaho, due to the states intense subjection to potato radiation, a very serious case. |
