duuuuuude . . . love it - the opening reminds me of LTJ Bukem. The whole thing is fun and moves along very nicely; you've got some nice aural layers happening there, and this piece makes me feel moved and grooved.
Groove on and great effort - kudos! I'm gonna pull this one and keep - if you don't mind. _________________ - Tom Carter

Yeah, the horns and overall spacey vibe could definitely remind somebody of Bukem. I'm not big on drum and bass, but I do like his stuff. Glad you like it. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

If you take the melody and develop it, it could turn into something really nice. Right now the main melody isn't going anywhere and just kind of walks around in circle scratching its head and wondering where to go next. |

Full agreement about how it goes in circles. The result of not having a clear direction when I started the piece (I was initially just playing around with the synth that's making the bubbly space pad, and ended up building a track around it).
However, I'm not sure I want to change the structure much now that I've had a while to listen to it. I've found myself thinking about music more in terms of EPs and albums instead of individual songs lately. It's creatively liberating to not need to make every track a regular "song". My ideal EP would contain two stand-out tracks . . . ones with serious macro-level composition: movements, builds, breaks, and so forth. Then there'd be one or two more free-form tracks. Jam sessions, doodles, grooves, stuff that DJs could use for texture and mood in the middle of a set . . . and finally an interlude or two. Very short, atmospheric pieces that tie things together thematically when you play through the thing in sequence.
This may well end up just being a groove track. I don't know if I want to make it a regular song. I've got to stop listening to it for a while to get a fresh ear, at any rate. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

If you go with just the groovy riff type of track, then I think you only need to rework the actual riffs for brass stuff. Are you familiar with Jon Hassel and his album with the Blue Screen? The album is called Dressing For Pleasure, and it's got some serious groovy acid/fusion/avant-garde jazz stuff going on, where Jon didn't play any concrete melodies, but either abstract riffs or impressionistic lines where everything is pretty much atonal even by jazz standards. It's very effective and super cool--take a listen if not for reference, just the cool music.
Another really cool reference would be Akira Jiimbo's stuff--not his actual CD's or the fusion stuff he does with Casiopea, but his drum solo works on VHS and DVD--titles like Independence, Evolution..etc. He's my favorite drummer, and he rigs his drumset with a Yamaha trigger system, where he maps individual notes, chords, riffs..etc to various drum triggers or trigger pads, so essentially, as he plays his drumset, he's playing the entire band by himself--but it's not the cheesy crap you see gimicky performers do--he's the real deal. The way he structures his pieces is very groovy and riff-oriented, while with concrete progressions in the way he uses pads, basslines, samples, and various drumming styles. I've attended his drum workshop before and watching him play live is a jawdropping experience.
If you get a .Mac (iDisk) account (it's free) or have a FTP account (or other reliable large file transfer methods), I could hook you up with some cool shit. Hell, hop on SoulSeek and you can browse my entire collection. |
