hey guys,
I was planning on buying a dvd from gnomon on mattepainting.
I know some of you have some of dylan cole's dvds, and others have dusso's.
Which one do you think is more informative and worth the money? I was really disappointed with the Ryan church dvd's i bought 2-3 years ago. This time, I'm tryin to be a bit more careful .
Thanks _________________ http://www.annisnaeem.blogspot.com/ |

Well, I've only seen one's from Church, Dusso, Feng Zhu and Iain McCaig. I think they all were informative and very cool. McCaig probably had the best teaching skills though, well IMO.
I have mixed feelings when people complain about these dvd's. Okay the image quality could be better. I think they're all good if you can afford to buy them. Most whiners are actually novices who can't possibly use any tips from the dvd's because they have no friggin' clue about anything. Then they ask "what layers/brushes/etc someone uses" like that matters at all.
I think that if you don't understand how mattes are done, Dusso dvd's are good. Maybe Cole ones can be even better. But please, don't think they make you better instantly, just watch and relax and try to soak in some of their wisdom..
Btw. My comments are not aimed at you, but people who complain about the dvd's in general. Oh, and well, if someone knows about this: I wonder what dvd's cover the large 3d aspect of mattes? (don't think they paint that camera movement ) |

mikko and ian> thanks. i think ill wait to see about the rumors then.
mikko> there's the whole projection camera thing. you model a basic scene in 3d, import into phtooshop, paint, go back to the 3d prog, and use a camera projection technique. But only so much can be done with that. I'd sure love a dvd on those techniques though! _________________ http://www.annisnaeem.blogspot.com/ |

Yeah annis, I know the process, but many people ask about it so I thought if there was a dvd that covers that part.
For example at cgchannel's Ryan Church interview thread, someone was asking how they paint the moving starships etc. in Star Wars.. |

From all the gnomon discs I have, I probably love most Iain McCaig's first one. And next all McCaig's stuff, he's veteran at teaching so he really knows what he's doing, not only in drawings but in teaching too.
Dusso 1 helped me a lot, and the rest helped too.. but the best are McCaig's. I haven't seen the new Scott Robertson's rendering discs, but they seem awesome.
What comes to 3d mattepaintings, Alp Altiner is gonna publish some DVDs, you can learn more from laborganika.com forums.. |
