I am wondering what mode everyone is using for painting? i am told to always use 16-bit when dealing with photography, yet is it the same with painting?
Obviously 16-bit is much more of a system resource hog, so i'd like to know if there is enough of a reason to do so.

I'd actually like to know, too, if it even makes any difference when you're painting with the paint tools? Also how can you tell, since computer displays generally speaking only show 8 bits per channel, anyway?

i always use 16bit when editing photos, you can tweek them better without getting gaps in the histogram and loosing captured data

as far as painting goes unless you're tweeking curves and levels alot i wouldn't have thought there was much need in painting in 16bit?

thanks for the link, Neverman, some good info on there.

Bob, I guess you are right, though I do like to play with curves and levels, there's only a small amount of that involved. As for myself, I can't see any difference between the two modes when I paint...so I'll stick with 8-bit. thanks for the replies, guys.

Saturated colors tend to loose structure when you tweak the values (via curves or levels). The difference between two saturated colors is more visible to the eye than the difference between two unsaturated ones. So when you have lots of saturated fresh colors in your painting, 16-Bit is safer.
