I've recently joined a painting course and we are supposed to scale up what we see so we can fill a big canvas with our model paintings.
And i'm finding it hard to do that. I've only done croquis before and there you draw things in the scale your eyes see. You can just follow contour lines to get a perfect picture, You can't do that when you scale up.

So any tips? Does it get easier after a while? Do you recommend you only paint things the scale your eyes see them? This feels extremely frustrating as if you can't paint with feeling. It's more like some mathematical problem.

Well, you can use the grid method to plot out where things are. This will feel mechanical, but once you have a scaled-up map to guide you I think you'll find that it's still possible to paint expressively.
