Now that I have two free brain cells to rub together, I'm feeling mightly glad to be back at Sijun: back in the groove, devoting the brain cells to drawing, etc. It's a big deal to me - bigger since my boss snorted dismissively at my interest in drawing. The idea being, science and research requires mental effort, drawing does not. Well, bullshit? You'd think a "cognitive scientist" would know better. So it goes. Negative stereotypes persist, all around.
So yeah: Huzzah! And the rest can go pound sand up their ass. ![Razz](images/smiles/icon_razz.gif) |

Hmmmm, never noticed "View unanswered posts" (until yesterday). Wonder if it's okay to comment just so they drop off the radar (and into oblivion). The ones that are spam-like, I mean. Helluva backlog... |

Lol, a cognitive scientist who thinks drawing doesn't require thinking should be immediately cast out of their profession. Just ridiculous. Buy him "Drawing on the Right side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards for Christmas. _________________ The future is not what it used to be |

For *years* I've been meaning to read that book; thanks for the reminder. If the used book store has two copies, will do! ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Do it. Even if you are lazy like me and have only read the introductory chapters... you will understand a lot more about visual perception. _________________ The future is not what it used to be |

Not sure if this is gush, vent, or just rave - hehe - but an idea keeps running through my head: develop a collaborative graphic novel (or whatever) here at Sijun (yes, right here in public, flapping in the wind, etc.). Has it beeen tried/done before and did the process descend into chaos (I imagine it would but who knows...)... |

durgldeep, just saw you joined this forum long before I did! It has been tried before, and it did fizzle. Obstacles (in my opinion) included the lack of a planned story arc, and uneven pacingwhich, at least the pacing, is almost necessary if people are going to feel comfortable contributing on a whim.
Still if you want to kick-start another one the last didn't have a lot going for it in terms of story originality (basically it was cartoon angelina jolie blowing up cars and shooting guns... kind of a bummer).
For what it's worth durgl, I know what you mean about 'sciency' people looking down on the arts. I'm a pre-medical student but chose a literature major to feed both halves of my brain. Lots of students are cool about it but there's always a few who like to look at me like I'm a bit off. ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Sampster, thanks. Re join date, shortly after I joined Sijun life was mostly hijacked by "sciency" stuff (bad news for this "dumb artist type" but I gained new appreciation for high school academics). Sorry I missed the collaboration, can someone point me to the thread? Admin, maybe? I don't quite get the "pacing" issue but I should look before asking silly questions.
I think the science/arts thing works in reverse too; I've heard "geek" for being 'too rational' in an arts forum. Lack of planning or [lowers voice] critical thinking (something the world needs more of IMO) would work against the collaboration idea, yeah. I can get into 'blow shit up' (the forces is the real deal; sorry Angelina) but I agree story arc is more important: character development, etc. - all those goodies from high school English class.
I thought polling would work for deciding genre (fantasy, sci-fi, non-fiction) but then choosing one genre would exclude those who are keen on others. Haven't thought about it much, will do that. Two things I did think about were "concept design" and "storyboarding". Even amateurs like me can contribute something useful to concept design. Storyboarding could solve the pacing problem (if I'm not being a blockhead re "pacing"). So the sequence would be: 1. story/plot concept; 2. character/environment concepts; 3. storyboarding; 4. rendering. (no surprise to most people)
Another thought: the genre problem doesn't exist in Jean Giraud's work, which moves between all of them (taken as a whole)...

No sign of the project in "Work in progress" (checked all posts post-2004 that have reply numbers in the middle double digits & higher). Maybe it's in another category...
Anyhoo, instead of thinking-it-to-death, I've got a few story lines in various stages of development (see also WIP/Patel Grand, or not). Re genre (and Jean Giraud), I like storys that straddle the fantasy/sci-fi divide (hence "the bald hobbit", below), which might be a way to get max number of people invovled. Or not.

Not gonna start a separate thread for this (lots of those already). Interesting article for various reasons:
Spanish MP's photo used for Osama Bin Laden poster
For starters, harder nowadays to plagiarize someone else's work (or photo). Three cheers for originality. ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Still sitting on this idea (buk buk buk). Thanks to those who bothered to comment. I realize that showing our work publicly is risky - so I've stuck mine out there (see Patel Grand). Over the past few years I've been fortunate to work with a group of people (researchers) whose integrity is rock solid, even while their public work was plagiarized often (until certain people realized the web is a small world and stopped). I've learned not to brake for those who wilfully exploit other people's work (who illustrate their personal values for everyone to see).
More thoughts (that I didn't mention earlier): when a collaboration is done properly, all contributions (both text and images) are sourced. Concepts ditto (maybe especially). [Edit/delete].
I'm not a writer. This is simply a sketch of what I mean to say. I'm sure there are lots of gaps in my writing/work (here and everywhere), lots of blind spots that others can see - which is the usual advantage in having more than one pair of eyes looking at the same material. Nuff said. ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif)

Had to rummage the (relevant) quote:
I found the art world too stuffy and cut off from its audience. Ive always been interested in street art because it is so instant for the viewer.

Was going to post about 'personality politics' versus getting-on-with-it (output matters more than personality) but the relevant thread has quietly disappeared (where a particular member was ridiculed for their interest in obscure symbology): nothing in search results under the original author or "confirmation bias" (the one term I recall, or think I do; other than "meme" (my own)). Personally I think science is much more interesting/useful than religion - but arguing personal values doesn't accomplish much? Also, lambasting this or that artist for being 'bizarre' is - bizarre? lol Where have these people been hiding?! ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

Hmmmm, seems the default Google+ image size jumps from 800 px to 2048
px http://picasa.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=1224181, no choice.
So: join Google+ and resize/upload a hundred or so pics back to their original
800 px (after switching hosts [cough]) or skip the Google+ experience.
Hmmmm, choices choices. ![Wink](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |
