Hello! I'm new to the digital art community but got a wacom tablet and ready to learn.

Right now I'm using artweaver and know photoshop is probably the best option, but...

Is there a better free alternative to artweaver?
Also, what types of brushes are you guys using?

A certain media, opacity, size? It looks like you guys are more or less using the same brushes in the speedpainting thread.

Edit: I am also downloading gimp right now

Check out Art Rage:

Quite inexpensive. Autodesk Sketchbook Pro is another good, inexpensive program (although it's better for doing initial sketches than finished works).

A general rule is to first block-in your painting with large brushes, only moving into smaller brushes and detailing once your colors and values look promising. Try to use hard-edged brushes more than soft airbrushes.

You'll also want to get familiar with masks and layers, as they are one of the biggest reasons to paint digitally in the first place.

Save often, and save lots of versions, in case you take your painting in a bad direction and want to revert to an earlier stage.
