SowleR -
One of the first things i noticed in this image is the presence of outlines. i'm assuming you're going for a realistic or semi-realistic effect here; remember that outlines rarely (if ever) exist in real life. Replace those outlines with shadow to accomplish depth, for example the arm in the foreground, the chest in the background. The outline that helps the image out, though, is the one defining the edges of the torso armor. The highlight and shadow you have on those parts makes an appearance that the edges made by the outline are 'pushed in'. Not sure if you wanted this effect or not. A specific light source would help, too.. if i had to be especially analytical. Also, what happened to the eyes? I can't really tell if they have a shiny bottom eyelid, or if the eyes have a skin color to them. (?)
Nice gun, very keen. i also enjoyed guessing what material the helmet thingy was made out of. The effects you used on the metal texture makes it come alive and makes it seem like the object itself is real and could be taken out of the image
Good luck and have fun on the image, guy.. this has great potential; it's an excellent start, a lot mightier than when i first started using photoshop

Hey sowler, nice pic. The lighting looks cool, I like the textures on back of the helmet too. Are you planning to add more textures to rest of it? Think it would look better, but for a first piece its a great job =) |

Fabulous responce!! thank you very much for explaining your thoughts very well!! Well I am following dhabih's tutorial and i made it to the smudge step so far... and i didnt totaly finish getting rid of those lines as you pointed out. I did not however notice the armor looking "indented" , after you mentioning it I see it too... I shall see what I can figure out! I do have one confession though.. i love how the texture looks on the helmet.. BUT it was only a test to see what it would look like with texture.. you see I made a new layer, and imported a cracked surface image I have in my maps collection for 3D.. I set the layer to multiply and thats what came out. I did not merge the layers for I would rather do it by hand.. unless this is an acceptable way to do it...?? I have no idea how you guys add the detail.. I made it this far ok.. but as for adding real nice detail I am at a large loss.
Oh and the eyes are supposed to be closed.. hehe I'm guessing that effect isnt working to well :P hehe
Please keep the suggestions comming!! good and bad it really helps me personaly to advance. Especialy on detail.. im REALLY lost.
thanks!

Hey all, after reading a bunch of posts around here I realize a-lot of you know what your talking about.. and after seing dhabih's work I got inspired and whipped up this image. Up until now I have only done 3D work, so this is my first photoshop image from scratch. It was also done with a good ole mouse. Ideas? suggestions? Don't go easy on me.. lay it thick if it needs to be. Also, this image is not finished.. im stuck on the "detailing" step in dhabih's tutorial... any suggestions on how to do this?
Thanks!

Very nice drawing...
one thing that caught my eye was the gun, and the position of the gun compared to the face. It appears as though the nose is behind the gun, however, the hair is infront of the gun... so it would kinda hafta do one of those weird MC Escher things.. like curve without curving ;P
Keep up the good work. |
