And now for a tutorial on how to do near vector-quality lines...With two tools in Photoshop.
I've found that when I start a drawing...It starts out first with the construction lines, and then doing the actual comic-book style line drawing ontop of those in a seperate layer. More often than not, that layer needs serious refining before I'm actually happy with it. Take a look below, at the section of this piece... This is where her hair meets her shoulder.
Notice on the upper part of the drawing, I have already refined some of the lines to the point I want them to be, because I'm happy with their composition. The other lines remain rough and sketchy... The way to go from Rough and sketchy, lies in the use of two tools.
The airbrush in two steps, and the eraser afterwards.
I use the airbrush to first sketch out the construction lines, and then start the actual fine lines on a layer over that. Once I'm happy with the placement, proportions, etc, I begin refining them. The second step in the airbrush, is to darken the lines to the point where they're all an even tone. I do this by using the second sized airbrush set on 50% opacity, and going over the existing lines several times. Notice the change on the hair in the right part of the image, versus the image above.
The third and final step, is using the eraser. I use the third brush size, and UNCHECK Size and Opacity. Using the eraser, I gradually thin down the lines until I get them the same thickness, with a precise edge:
This technique is also really good for the tribal tattoo-art that I do...I sell prints on transfer-paper of tribal tattoo designs, done with this technique in photoshop...Here's some quickie examples I threw together...
Hope this helps!
