Hello!
Could you please tell me whats wrong with this face? I have gone blind.
And could someone please tell me how to construct a nose?
My portraits always get bold, how do i apply hair to a face when the hair is not in the original composition?
Please save your comments on the ears for the moment. I will need to check what real ears look like first (I had a mirror here somewere =/ )

Fred: is your head tutorial finnished or will you post more lessons for us? I will print it out. For it was you who wrote it right?

edit: Simon, just use {IMG}http://www...image.jpg{/IMG} , but replace the {}s with []s.

Wow the nose looks pretty good to me. I think your cast shadows could have a sharper edge, which would add some contrast and form information.

Changes for better or worse?
Propotional problems?
Is the lightning on the ears ok?
I kept the shadows soft for thats part of my original idea. same thing with the contrast. I wanted that feeling that Brom has in his characters. He makes hes shadows very pale.
And should i apply hair?

I say keep her bald and paint the rest of her scalp too for better framing. It looks a bit chopped now.
Nose looks fine to me. The nostrils are somewhat large, giving her a bit of a nubian touch.
Her left cheek-bone, the one in the shadow side, where it curves up towards the corner of the eye/nose section could use some deeper shadows. It's protruding a little too much.
Where the neck curves up towards the chin, the curve is too big, making it look as if the neck connects straight to the chin. Pulling the cast shadow from her right jawbone further down and darkening it further in will help solve that.
This is lovely stuff.. An interesting balance between painterly/rough and dare I say.. polished...
Extra points for the vertical markings, looks great! Nice choice of colours..
Danny
ps. Reminds me of Eve Salvail.. the French model...

Simon-sorry for not getting to this sooneer. I have been really busy. And with the server down, that was frustrating...
The nose you have now currently looks pretty good. But there are two major, or minor thingsto consider that might not be quite right.
1. the wings of the nostrils, the back attachment on the inside of the nostrils, they come in to the nostril too far. It sort of makes the nostrils look like pipes, as they are taking on their own shape.
The other thing is the bottom plane of the nose, the septum is too evenly lit, and has a whole value step down, and hue change, also it is a hard edge break up, a softer edge would help it a bit. I will try to do a quick tracing and post it back before lunch today if I get the opp. All in all, I think it is pretty strong, especially under the diffused light conditions you gave it.
Oh, I just stared again. The ear on the left side of her head looks like it sits about a half inch behind the eye socket. Better modelling would help this a bit. Remember the depth of the skull. There is as much depth as width generally, and the ear sits half way back into this depth, so think perspective, and try to get the right musculature placement in front of the ear to give it proper seating on that side plane...
I haven't read all the posts but what is the deal with her eyes? Are the pupils huge and pale, or are they non existent.? I had to look very closely to see the color change...I will wait for your answer before I go into them...
And the eyelashes, they look clumpy? Is that the effect you were going for? Generally, you want to find pleasing shapes to clump them together, look at Gil Elvgren, the master at this. They work if you are looking for that gritty cyberpunk feel, but attractive, they might not help that look all that much...
The bridge between her nose is pretty flat also. Is her nose just a continuous mass from her forehead? Sometimes this is a character type...If it is not supposed to be like that, then you need a plane in there to divide the brow line and the forehead.
I will wait for some feed back from you to continue any more...But , as there is a lot said here, there is not a lot to do to finish this off. Just better judgement to get a cleaner, more effective image. Nice job on this peice. Cant wait to hear from you . |

Ive tried to change the things you pointed out Fred, but i cant seem to get it right. The surface is getting smoother and its easier to get caught in details rather then working with big shapes. I tried making a blocked out ver. Mabye i will do pupils and all that I dont know, right now there arnt any. I will have to get some reference for the eyelashes, I just put these there to make sure it became a female.
I moved the eyebrows down abit and tried to fix the nosebridge.

Simon-she is looking heap loads better. The bridge of the nose works great.
Still didn't get the idea behind the eyes, but I really like the blocked in version, it has a lot of charm.
One thing you might try that spooge spanked my hand for was dont use such a small brush when you model large planes. Use the biggest brush you can use before it starts to kill your edgework. I think this might be why you are having a tough time with the smoother surface. It is really easy to get caught using one brush for everything.
Keep posting this as you progress... |
