Tell me what you think of the basic ideas, how I can add more depth to them and make them more alive, more action in the pictures. I've never been good at doing that. Some people are great at capturing the moment, making a picture come alive. I'm good at capturing the dull moments.
But anyway, here they are.

If your old enough, and can find them, I would suggest looking at the series of comics called Faust. The artist's name is Tim Vigil, I think you would dig his stuff.
Like me, you should prolly start reading threw some anatomy books. If your going to take sketching/concept art seriously, learning all you can on anatomy will help a lot.
For your sketchs. There isn't any setting for the emotions on your characters. Why is the lady kneeling with her arms behind her back? Is she tied up, crouching over her victom, or in a room of other lusting vampires? Facial expressions can be a challenge. I would do more studies on poses and basic human anatomy before you go into expressions. Do the basic wire frame sketches. Using as few lines as possible to draw a pose out of magazines, webpages, or whatever you can dig up.
Your troll looking man is going to be a toughy with that postioning. The way you have the picture, his face is what is to grab the viewers eye. Lighting on a close up such as yours would be the key, I would think. And of course knowing your facial expressions and shading could help out in this aspect.
Thas about all I got. Tackle the dramatic poses in simple wire frame sketches. Then work on building up from there.
Yoinks!

Samdragon- I met Tim at a Comic Con a long time ago. I got a couple of his comics signed. Haven't looked at them in ages though. I should bust them out again, but his comics give me nightmares Hee hee...
If your a die hard fan of Vigils Samdragon, I could part with the couple comics I have, which I know one is atleast signed. Throw me an email if your interested.

That's a nice offer, but I just can't collect comics. If they are good I'm always fliping through them, trying to figure out the artwork and stuff. The only comics I have that I have never misstreated are FrankMiller signed "darknight returns" box set thingy..and uh..what else.I think that's it, the rest are all wrinkled and well miss treated from me always looking at them |

woohoo, i thought Iwas the only person in the world who knew about those comics. I have the original first run setting right here under my tablet! it's funny how they don't look so cool as they did many years ago.
You could tell a story of emotions by just drawing someones hand. Don't rely too heavily on the face for emotions. it's a key factor of course, but use the body parts also. Gnarly bend fingers and tense muscles along with bend arms at strange angles make for some really strange emotions.
there are plenty of books out there on facial expressions, I think there is one that is called "facial expressions" for artist.
Best thing is to grab a mirror and make funny faces in it and draw that. Once you start to get the hang of it, start distorting the features.
have fun! |
