concept;
A general idea derived or inferred from specific instances or occurrences.
Something formed in the mind; a thought or notion. See Synonyms at idea.
A scheme; a plan: “began searching for an agency to handle a new restaurant concept” (ADWEEK).

artist;

Jucas- don't confuse the kid. Just tell him.
dontfallin- they are artists who design how everything should look in games, film, and other entertainment markets(characters, creatures, vehicles, enviroments..etc).
Another side of it would be industrial design, which covers basically everything from cars, airplanes, CD players, hair dryers..etc
Take a look at Syd Mead's work. He's the most famous concept artist/industrial designer of this age.
