hey, you know, I sat down to draw for 4 hours today, and my pencil never even touched the paper, I have the worst case of "artists block" in the world, this is horrible, I don't know what to do... oh god, the pain! make it stop! blah blah... [yeah, I'll cut it short and sum up... basically alot more b*tching, and whining... and numerous bashings of my head into the wall]

If I find I can't draw - I don't bother. If you really try it becomes harder. Go do somthing inspirational; look at others work, go out and do somthing different, try drawing in a new style - just go try a whole bunch of new stuff!

{{{also get rid of that little icon - it's a little sucky}}}

Well i advise you go out and buy some drugs get high see some weird shit and then you will have loads of things to draw
Ok and now for the more wise thing to do. Watch a movie or take a long walk. I get loads of ideas by doing these. Unfortunately my skill is usually inferior to the task of drawing what my sick mind comes up with.

When I can't think of something to draw, I just draw what I see. Hands, houshold objects, yourself (with a mirror)... all good for practice.

Doing blind contour drawings is a great way to get yourself in a drawing mood. (Get Kimon Nicolaides' book The Natural Way to Draw for a good long description. Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain talks about it too, as well as probably a million other art books.)

Anyway, get yourself a rather complicated object (your hand, a friend, a flower, an action figure, etc. Something with lots of curves.) Set your paper down off to the side, and just draw the object without looking at the paper. Let your eyes follow along the edges and contours of the object, and let your hand follow along, doing its own thing.

This is a great way to get into the drawing mood, because you're using your drawing skills, but you don't have to worry about whether the picture is turning out or not since you're not even looking at it. It's a good warm-up exercize, essentially. And then you can go draw something else once you're in the mood.

I think, getting up and NOT drawing is probably the best way to foster bad habits if you ever want to do this for a living. Point is that you can't do that if you are hired to draw something under a deadline. There will be a million times you'll draw when you have block...

My advice. Sit down and draw. Sometimes it'll turn out better than others, but at least you 'worked' through it.

On the other hand if you're just drawing for kicks and never intend on doing it for a living... then disregard anything I said!

Yes, yes. Both Waylon and Liquid are dead on.

Do what they say.

Blind contours suck, but they are an enormously valuable exercise. Just make sure your subject model is interesting (like a sexy picture, a cool car, or pictures of grandma's teeth).

Whatever you do, don't not draw at all (uuuuhhhh.....yeah that's correct). You gotta learn to work your way through that block.

I usually start out with random shapes and letters and well, just anything, the side of a book whatevever, it gets you into it, and maybe even just two lines interersecting at the right place can spark an idea for you to draw, i do this all the time! ... Thats also why my sketchbooks are filled with pages of just plain crap and big dark lines!!

You should not draw for a certain amount of time at all and then after a few days you will get very very strong internal feeling to draw something.

Try to do something else all that time like speding your time with your girlfriend, parents, friends and etc.

Very soon such a kind of timewasting will become very boring to you and you will draw something really good

What I've experienced is that the less you draw, the harder it is to come up with ideas. Because, 1st. If I'm not warmed up, it's harder to visualize ideas 2nd. I get hung up on the motif. To get ideas, just draw and draw all the time. Draw from life, photos, draw stupid motifs, no matter what, then eventually ideas will come while drawing. It's christmas, draw santa
