While i was browsing through some of the topics on this forum, i saw that many people aren't satisfied with the newest release of Photoshop.
In my own experience, ps5.5 and ps6 both don't excel in speed, and i couldn't notice any difference of performance between the two. I used 5.5 only for a short time, and did a clean install of windows after 5.5 (and before 6.0) so i'm not capable of doing exact performance tests.
However, when i was checking the options of ps6.0 i discovered a option wich i'm not sure anyone has yet tried it. I am talking about the "memory&image cache" settings, where you can specify how many physical memory photoshop should use. The defualt is 50%. Most of the time i use photoshop, the only applications i run (next to the "standard" windows apps) are winamp, and maybe one session of IE (and photoshop itself ofcourse In my own experience, the percentage can be easily be set on 80% this way, or maybe even higher. Since the performance in photoshop when using large images is basicly relied on the systems RAM and diskspeed (correct me if i'm wrong), i think this may help a bit.
The option can be found this way:

Edit -> Preferences -> Memory&CacheUsage

I hope this helps. Please tell me your experiences.

i think that's a pretty well-known option.

umm, my problem was that every time i tried to save something or exit photoshop, it completely crashed my computer. and i'm running win2k, so that's no mean feat. considering that i got tired of photoshop 6.0's "improvements" in about a week, it certainly didn't bother me to switch back to 5.5.
