to do what you want straight out of your head, you will need an understanding of the form and shapes of the face, and understand how lighting works with them. needless to say, this takes a while. try to find a reference picture of a women in a profile view, it should help. |

I disagree. The shapes of a face consists of shadows, not clean lines. Read magazines, and stuff. Look at pictures, and you will see that a clean line wouldn't give the same effect as a area of lines.... |

You need to know two things mainly: 1. anatomy and 2. the planes of the face and how they are effected by light and change with perspective. How you get the former is to study everything you can find on anatomy. How you get the latter is to Draw, Draw Draw and Draw some more. |

another suggestion is to sculpt. when you draw, your making an illusion . for many its hard to grasp without the basic knowledge of how light works on objects, or without knowing about anatomy...etc.
sculpting on the other hand..you dont have to worry about shadows,lights...or your line quality.
its all about the shapes and anatomy knowledge. once you get this down properly..drawing should be a little easier to pick up.
but make sure you draw as well so you develop your hand/eye coordination.

Well.. i'll have to disagree on the anatomy argument.
Not everyone has those same cheekbones/chin/nose as those girls in magazines. You can pull this girl off and keep the anatomy. |
