I think LORD of THE RINGS can only be a flop for fans. Regardless how much money they put in there.. they will never be able to capture this .. incredible heavyness you "feel" when Frodo carries the ring over the mountains to the vulcano.

This is one of the best books probably ever written, how could you ever transfer it to another medium without loosing the atmosphere.

Well, we'll see in cinema.

So if they take out the mines of Moria, won't that mean Gandalf doesn't die? Sooo, I think it's rather doubtful that they'd remove one of the most seminal scenes of the book...

As for being disappointed; if you expect it to be as good or better than the book, you ARE going to be dissappointed. Period. Just try not to let the book distract you from the fact that the movie can be bitchin' for it's own right. This happened with Episode 1; everybody expected it to be a life-altering psydo-religious experience, when in fact it was just a fucking movie.
"A pessimist is never dissapointed" as the saying goes.
