Well thanks Matthew for noticing, glad you think so. You have been getting better faster than me, so I better work harder. I do think you have learned something about texture from a few of your recent paintings. I think Larsson became popular more from the subject matter than the art (my Swedish relatives have his stuff everywhere), but subject is part of the art, I suppose.
Octavian, Yes, when I started in illustration I had no idea. I did not do well at art center, I was not really advanced enough to take advantage of what was offered me there. Since then I have figured out what they all were talking about, mostly. And the market for what I do now did not exist back then, and what I was trained for now does not exist either. So I don't know what conclusions you can draw from this, but learning to draw as well as you can is probably a good foundation that is as flexible as you can hope for.
HPX, I think I like the variety of edges and marks and the simplicity with which it was done. Strong, clear simple, with good interest in the paint usage. BTW I think your mech painting needs more color and value in the halftones, less black and contrasty stuff near where the light is hitting it. Just a thought, worth what you paid for it.
I agree with what Duracel said, but careful of looking at Charest too much. Might get the wrong conclusion out of it with such high finish. Sometimes he gets the most basics stuff a little messed up too, like we all do. I think it would be better to look at a wide variety of artists with strong drawing skills, esp animators and even the pencils of good comic artists. But even better are old master drawings. Duracel, I know you were just giving one example, but I thought I would add this thought.
OK paint to post.

thank you kindly guys.
Edit- ohh it took ages for the post to get accepted and then I saw yours there spooge.
Spooge, thanks for the texture comment there.
octavian, hehe maybe I am a mutant. I like your latest works there.
Duracel, many thanks for your kind words there. I think I am looking for the opposite though at the moment, I want more painting than drawing. I will probably change back later, hmm Matthew is experimenting too much. Thanks again for keep giving me feedback there Dura. I like the feeling in that latest one there.
forcing myself to keep simple, think I will beat myself up soon if I can't get it right.

Matthew, nononoo. The reason you are going to open a vein is the drawing. It has nothing to do with whether you are using line, a pencil, charcoal, paint, wacom, etc. Drawing is structure, and that is what is missing. You cannot paint if you can't draw.
On the one you just did the eye sockets are too large and they do not extend across the skull as you have them. The shape of the hair implies where the ear sits, and it is too high. The back of the skull is missing, or the facial features are too large on the skull, a common problem.
All of this is drawing, yet there are no lines involved. So please reconsider thinking about drawing. No pencils or lines required.
Oh sweet jesus, the bottomobarrell here

Apipe: those vehicles rock1!! I love the grav bike!!!!! thanks for the props too!
pringle: always fun to look at your stuff. your last is definitely more dramatic!!!
insane lemur: red x doot. thanks for the comment.
Spooge: thanks for the words... What I love most about your works is the gracefulness with wich you handle light. Its always dramatic and yet subtle... Not like silverware crashing to the floor, more like feng shui for the eyes. In reference to working out light, can you give an angle on how you start to seek out forms? I've been having the hardest time going from drawing or monotone, to fleshing things out with color. I end up "noodling" as you say with my values. I find it hard to tie the whole painting together so that everything feels like it exists in the same world. I dunno if I'm making sense.... I guess what I'm looking for is maybe a comment on how you start to form your values in the beggining of a painting and see it through to the end. i.e. is it a struggle the whole way through? or do you have a plan?
anyway, sorry to b.s. so much. heres a figure drawing today.

Guys this is truley great works of art!
Spooge -- Im sure this is nothing new coming at you but im speechless when describing your work. . . . . . . im hoping an emoicon will represent a thousand words. . . its is after all still a picture I do have a question after reviewing your work over the past. . . well lets jsut say a long time:) Regarding your beautiful textures, Are you using some sort of custom brush or do you go over your painting with many different colors with low opacity brush. Im always afraid to lay on the colors you put in your paintings because of what might be a terrible end result. I know textures are not as relevent as the value of the colour but to me......using your works as an example. . . .it makes a HUGE difference. You think I should be more "reckless" by just putting the colours down and learning from what works?
Well, most of you already have a definitive style to your art, im not liking mine so im still searching/testing, however you would like to call it. In the mean time, ill leave you with this "speed". Im not so sure what exactly a "speed painting" requires because some go for an hour, some go for a couple minutes. . . im guessing spooge is working at minimum an hour per speed. . . so ill try matching that with this sorry attempt
My base colors. . . so much for reckless eh?
. . . and what I have now:
