The theme for this month:

LIGHTCYCLE 3D

Reference image from TRON

As promised, this month's theme is a platform for 3D modeling, although we'll be just as happy to see 2D works if 3D isn't your thing.

The TRON lightcycle -- the icon of the earliest days of 3D modeling -- seemed the perfect topic. So here's the brief: how would you design and model the lightcycle?

You might follow the Apple'esque approach of TRON Legacy, or take it off in some crazy organic direction, or even just tweak the classic design. Simply recreating the original model might be a decent enough challenge.

Feel free to accessorize if the stated task is too easy.

--

New and old accepted, 2D and 3D, digital and not, finished or sketched. Feel free to cross-post images into other relevant threads, and to post older images that fit the theme. The more images the better.

I'm going for a design of my own, had to try some mainshapes. Still not there I believe, what do you guys think about a bigger backwheel?

That's working pretty well already. The lower half of the cockpit doesn't quite work, but I don't mind the differing wheel dimensions.

Thanks Sumaleth, yea I agree. Smile
I have some other problem areas to solve and that would be the same as you mentioned and also the rear axle part, at first in the concept I was thinking the axle outside the wheel but now when I look around the simple 3d model I made here it is gonna be too wide I feel......hmm..

The steering is gonna troublesome too, maybe the whole front part should be able to move.... gonna messa round with the mainbulk in 3d some more...
Fun project nevertheless.

Here's a test main bulk frame, just a screenshot:

I had to try out the details in my concept but as I suspected the model is gonna need a lot remodeling of the shapes with not following the concept. Here I tested out the backwheel axle inside of the tyre, perhaps a futurustic wheel could be 3 parts.... hmm....
What you think about the steering wheel axle? would it work? I guess one have to think steering servo....

Anyway, another test:

Btw I guess the seat needs to work too, don't wanna think about that now lmao...

More, more! Very Happy
I don't think *gusto* ever goes out of style? (thinking of Picasso, yep)
Not sure how rationing ever got mixed with art stuff...

Tomasis, nice intrepretation (if that's the right word), been thinking of doing
something similar (stuck atm)... Smile

Tomasis, you know the steering thing is gonna be troublesome, we'll see further up the road what I can do with it. Thanks. ...You know that looks cool, I'm starting to think of those old 19th century bikes... Very Happy

durgldeep, thanks my man. Smile you should definetely do something in 3d, can the lightcycle be sculpted? would be interesting to see technical stuff that you do...

I've been reinstalling my system at the moment and updated the internal memory, gotta love it when there's only support for the motherboard expansion limit, in my case 8GB. Howver I only had 4 GB previously so its better than nothing: rather cheap too actually surprisingly enough...
I saved the original blend file so hopefully the file works, otherwise I will have to start over.... Gonna get back to this thread tomorrow, well if I have time that is.....

System up and running again, made a lot of different diagnostics and benchmark testing, didn't feel the ram was up to par but I guess it is... Hmm guess I could have lived with 4GB if one compare..... Anyway...

Trying out som solidify details, gonna make them more thin...

durgldeep, holy shit! did you see this? its for the upcoming version, that is gonna be useful whatever you build, I might go Blender all the way for my future projects .....instead of using Sculptris....

Oh good, all that jargon made my head explode, *picks up pieces* Very Happy
Think my learning curve is maxed out atm but yeah looks good. Re human
figure (in that page), still not liking the apparently popular solution to arm
pits (make an arch); hope I can find a better solution when I get there
("collision" will work?).

A "lightcycle" should be pretty easy in sketchup (and now I know enough
about materials to jazz it up in blender). Couldn't find a clear image in
google, will have another look...

Nice work, as usual, whom. Smile

Looks ace whom, im getting a steam-punk vibe actually, really original take on the light cycle Tomasis

No 3D in this one, I was kinda going for a wire-frame feel, like an alpha version of the tron universe

durgldeep, those original concepts are real cool, would love to see you make one like that. Smile Thank you.

T_England, lol damn I am have made far too many steampunk pictures for my own good, thank you. Smile Nice color temperature there, now let's see some 3d too. Very Happy ...Naah kidding, 3d is almost too time consuming, isn't it? Detailing 2d takes almost the same amount for me, maybe I am slow these days.....
Age is a hell of thing... Embarassed

Update, still adding more detail and trying to make the different parts work....

Whom, that's some tidy shit right there! I wasn't a fan of those long pipes from front to back in the earlier draft, but it's looking damn sexy now! Hope you do a paintover with your usual exploratory approach. Very Happy

Been thinking of a more finished scene with the cycle, not sure if I will make it within the month though. Appreciate it, thank you. Smile
Do you do any 3d work? I guess I haven't seen any on your blog other than that when you mention painting in 3d (3ds?) Are those 3d elements involved?

I got the front wheel done, then stalled in proportions/precision.
Hard to explain but what works well for 'organic' shapes (too many angles and
levels of detail to account for them all) stalls when actual precision is involved.
We'll see what happens next. Smile

Started to put things together now, this is what the materials will look like. Might be minor changes to emissions material and such....
Gonna see what kind of hinges and stuff that I want to add to make it look better.....

Sorry for hogging up space, this is my new blog now haaa! Twisted Evil

Nah just kiddin....
I made some minor changes and refined the detail on some of the cables and addded two others at the same time...
The model is up to 500 000 faces at the moment, hopfeully my system will be able to do 200 000 more, we'll see.... could be interesting nevertheless lol.
I think I will probably only focus on the bike now instead of making a scene which was my initial idea. Time is gonna be an issue.

durgldeep, appreciate it maan, you' ve been too kind to me. Smile

Here's my finished version, it also gave me an excuse to work on something more finished for my models section. So with this one it made me get of my ass and make a better directory, this one is placed in my models directory on my site. I know it is not perfect but it is a start nevertheless. Very Happy
big resolution:

the LCD screen is how the driver navigates the vehicle....

Btw I ended up with 700 000 faces, maybe my computer can take 1 million if I'm lucky....

Changed the links above to tinypic, I might make changes to the blog directory in the not so distant future.

This one will be up permanently now I believe, adding it here if those above disappears:

Wow, you really tucked in to this topic. Very nice final design. I dig the way the wheel arch design carries through to the shell.

Haven't messed around with 3D since my old Amiga days when Bryce was given away on a cover disk. Hehe, loved how it could take over 24 hours some times to render a complex scene which was, what... half a dozen cubes and a phallus back then! Very Happy Most of my stuff tends to be plein-air landscapes and such, but I would like to start experimenting with basic shapes to set up perspective and lighting situations to paint over. I can't justify spending the money for small basic use, but Google Sketchup looks like it would be perfect.

The 3DS stuff is just painting on different layers with different assigned depths - kind of like painting on multiple sheets of glass like they used to do for film effects.
