I promised myself I wouldn't do this, but here goes:
I have to chip in in defense of my second favourite film of all time: starship troopers.
rubbersharkman, i don't really understand why you didn't make the leap, when you already had all the ingredients: saved by the bell, the ultimate celebration of jocks, mindless joy from conformity, proper and american and cheery and perfect. and on the other side: sci-fi. geeky. nerdy. socially outcast from jock circles; look at who made the movie: it's based on a heinlein novel. paul verhoeven directed it. this isn't a movie that's made for the jocks, for the popular people, for those who revel in normality. it's made for those who see the banality and the cruelty behind it. I don't know about you, but wanted to beat the supposed protagonists in the face from minute three.
excerpt from a salon article:
quote: (Starship Trooper's) irony meter is cranked to 11 and the story's moral polarities are thrown into grave doubt. You could argue that nearly all of "Starship Troopers" is a parody of a propaganda film; its cast of hard-bodied young unknowns (including future Bond girl Denise Richards) and its "Melrose Place"-style love quadrangle mimic the ideals presented by both wartime Hollywood and Joseph Goebbels' propaganda machine. "That was the style of the movies in the '30s and '40s, and also of the fascist idiom," Verhoeven told Strauss. "There is an indication that this society is not so far away from fascist thinking, which is what the movie says, isn't it?"
....
"Starship Troopers" -- still one of the most elaborate and expensive technical achievements in film history -- is also a stunningly realized war movie, a gory, thrilling adventure yarn driven by Verhoeven's elaborate camera work and Phil Tippett's astonishing creature effects. "If you look at the movie and don't think about it," Verhoeven said at the time, "it's really just young kids fighting giant bugs." Even that conflict is viewed with ambivalence. Naturally the viewer roots for the kids against the bugs, but it gradually becomes clear that human aggression started the war and most of what is "known" about the arachnid civilization is only prejudice and false supposition.
I think this film needs to be seen with a little more involvement than, say, blade 2. and that's the problem, cause few people do, unless they view every movie that way.
I think that Starship Troopers is a most excellent film, and more than that, a work of art that includes my reaction as well as yours. I like to think that i "got" it, and i've heard others say they "got" it, but in a different way than i did. it doesn't matter though.
if you think the movie belongs here, it does. it's your choice. but i think you miss out on something intelligent, something ironic and something great.
thanks for reading!

wayfinder- I think most of the audience just didn't understand the deeper layer of Starship Troopers. It inherited a fascist point of view from Heinlein, but made a twist and turned it into a satire of fascism. The common folk don't usually look that deep into films.
I personally enjoyed that film and have it on DVD. I wish the film could've been grittier and darker, but what they ended up with was still entertaining. |

I think starship troopers is pretty good, it can be mindlessy entertaining or funny depending on how you view it. Erm, and I thought space truckers was fun.
I think spawn is a stinking turd of a film. |

Well, every movie sucks major fucking balls, including Conan, Apocolypse now, Star wars, etc, etc, etc.
the only good movies are:
Crippled Masters - PEOPLE WITHOUT LEGS OR ARMS DOING KUNG FU BETTER THAN BRUCE LEE!!! Wo0o0o0o0o0!!!!
10 deadly weapons of kung fu - Yeah, there are 10...
The incredibly strange creatures who stopped living and became mixed-up zombies - A Musical!
The Naked Killer - SHE'S naked...and she's killing people.
Barn of the blood Llamas - Crazed genetically-altered llama's that prey on ovulating women!
Satan's Cheerleaders - Go, team, Go! |

Josie and the Pussycats.
Blair Witch Project.
That one with Drew Barrymore and the guy who was in DaVinci's Inquest that time and occasionally plays Sherlock Holmes (can't remember the title).
Parent Trap (the new one, and the old one, and any others made).
I love all Mel Brooks' movies (that I've seen), and the Pink Panther ones were good too. |

Signs was a faith movie. As long as you realised that and watched it as such, the ending was fine. Same as with contact.
If you watched Signs as any other type of movie, you were disappointed. |

I just saw a movie on satellite last night, and it was the worst thing with a reasonable budget and big name stars I've EVER SEEN! I missed who was the director, does anyone know? The movie is "LAPD", made in Canada, based on a true story about corruption in the LA police force. Michael Madsen, Dennis Hopper and another famous guy (fat, older, plays the father) I don't know the name of, one of those character actors that get cast in a lot of movies.
The script was terrible of course, and the lighting etc, but that doesn't explain Michael Madsen's atrocious acting. Here's a guy who's been in a lot of movies, including masterpieces, and he's hamming it up like a novice without talent on a first screen test!!!! I was stunned. Can anyone explain to me what's up with that? |

I don't think SW 1 or 2 are bad at all, I think people were just disappointed (same with MIB2). The SW films are meant to be basic stories, so we really shouldn't expect anything "challenging".
Starship Troopers was hilarious
Fargo is excellent, it's Starship Tr. with an even more serious underlying theme.
Good films leave me with mixed feelings - not about the movie, but about life, and my part in it. (Donnie Darco, Songs from the Second Floor(danish), American Beauty, Beijing Bicycle, etc, etc, etc.)
Oh, and I liked Zoolander too
But the worst one... hmm... I agree, every film revolving around Van Damme or Steven Seagal is annoying. "Dungeons and Dragons" was pathetic. "Boxing Helena" too. "Evolution" was the pits, talk about bad advertising plug-in - Head & shoulders killed the monsters by being injected into the anus, exploding their fancy guts all over the actors.
There are so many indifferent movies, and in my opinion, they're the real shit, because they aim to waste my time.

I'm a big fan of satire so I loved Fargo and Starship Troopers.
And I absolutely LOVED Signs! Man, what a totally crazy, totally brilliant idea for a film that was. Just so completely out of left field. |

Hot damn, what about all the Austin Powers bashing! I've seen Austin Powers 2 for like four times and Doc Evil played by Mike Myers is nothing but groovy. "Zip it!", dammit! |

DR. EVIL
Mini-me, something to eat?
(expectant pause)
No?
(pause)
OK.
(to room)
Tired.
Gentleman, I have a plan. As you know, the most powerful man in
the world is
the President of the United States. But he is just that- a man,
subject to
temptations of the flesh like any other man. Here's what we do:
we make it
seem that the President has had "extra-marital oral relations"
with- and this
is the kicker-
DRAMATIC STING, SNAP ZOOM TO DR. EVIL.
DR. EVIL
With a White House intern!
Dr. Evil gloats. So does Mini-Me.
NUMBER TWO
(clearing his throat)
Uh-hem.
DR. EVIL
What, that already happened?
Number Two nods.
DR. EVIL
This is ri-goddamn-diculous. Oh well, how about a frickin' time
machine? Does
the president have a time machine? Have I been scooped on that? |

Fast and the Furious. (Couldn't finish without a hose)
Coyote Ugly. (Luckily I had a hose)
Boys Don't Cry. (I tried VERY hard to finish it... I think I did)
I'm sure I have MANY more on my list, but I will stop there. |

"The Patriot (American Braveheart, just a million times worse)"
I didn't like all the American propiganda crap, but oh man, when he took that axe out with his kids in the forrest... it brought a tear to my eye. (in a sick, perverted way, not in a sad way)
The Royal Tenenbaums was good, though I could see why some people may not like it(I'd call it lack of taste, but I can at least SEE where they are coming from). I really loved Bottle Rocket and Rushmore, I can't wait for these 2 to come out with more movies. It's like the Cohen brothers. Love them all. Fargo, no sorry, I can't see where you are coming from. Idiot!
Apocolypse Now, I found it very dull as well. Sorry. Just not my subject matter I guess. (certainly not a BAD movie though)
I dont see how someone could call The Exorcist the worst movie ever. The only movie to date that I was scared from. I had to watch it over multiple seatings.
"I liked The Royal Tenenbaums. Especially the part where the guy tries to kill himself, that's a good song."
That was a beautiful scene. Eliot Smith - Needle in the Hay. That's the song. Just thinking about it, I have to go watch that scene again. I love it.
Vanilla Sky, I liked it. I bought the DVD. I cried at the end. Yeah, well... suck it up. I'm a guy! OMG!
It looks to me like most people are just putting up movies they thought were bad, or let them down, not THE WORST MOVIES OF ALL TIME for them?
I mean, for me, Fast and the Furious insulted everything in my body. Anything that I ENJOYED about my movie watching experiences where SHATTERED by that.. ugh, I can't even describe. I want to kill anyone that is associated with it. I LOATHE the movie.
I don't see how someone could loathe The Royal Tenenbaums or Fargo? Not like it, not enjoy it, dislike it... but worst movie ever? Hardly.
I'm surprised no ones mentioned O Brother Where are Though? Or The Big Lebowsky. I love them both, but stupid people tend not to understand movies like them.
Ok, I guess I can shut up now. I just love movies, watch so many of them, and love talking about them
One last thing. Go watch Ravenous. Oh man... that's a tough sucker to watch. Even if you're jaded, you'll most likely cringe. (Good movie, Mix between Cannabilism and Vampirism)

Jason X - I am a huge fan of Friday the 13th series, but this absolutely blew my mind...... I cant believe how much it sucked.... Now, Jason VS Freddy better be good, if they ever end up making it....
Fear Dot Com (www.feardotcom.com) - How stupid is that? To make the website phonetically what it really is.... arg. I thought it was gonna be remotely interesting, remotely scary, but it was absolutely stupid...... waste of my 7 dollas. ARGGGGGGGGGGGGG!
What are they gonna come up with next? The dancing hooligans? |

Nail Gun Massacre...
Worst movie ever, hands down.
The best part is the odd nude scene where the camera man shakily zooms in close enough to a womans chest to make it turn blurry, starting from a rooms distance away. No story, no artistic value.
Anything on mst3k, but i Love mst3k.
Battlefield Earth makes a high mark on complete crap movies.
Magnolia, I got it, but it was so fucking anti-climatic it pissed me off, 3 hours for what? Frogs falling from the god damned sky?
Anything from John Carpenter other than "The Thing" which is prolly my favorite horror flick.
The batman movies without burton directing, although Arnold was hillarious in whatever one he was in, not sure if he was supposed to be.
The Exorcist is dreadfully borring.
Apocalypse Now is one of my favorites.
Fight Club, Vanilla Sky, The Thing, Alien, Starship Troopers, Seven, 12 Monkeys, Scarface, Heat, and half a dozen porno movies also rank high, (j/k bout the porn... i think). |
