Emulation is sumthin to be careful of.
you should probly do some stuff that looks like you arent surrounded by printouts of wes burts sketchbooks.
seriously

Diaper rash: Can you please exptrapolate what you were saying about the Wes Burt Sketchbook thing. I can see a link there, but no more so than anybody who has put more than one sketch on a page of their sketchbook. You will obviously look for a relationship or a link between unralated sketches, be you the viewer or the artist.
What I"m trying to say is I don't see a link besides both of them being pages of a sketchbook presented for an audience. _________________ "It's not the tools you use but how you use them that counts." |

damn max, i love the recent stuff in here, the creature stuff is just great.
how do you approach the thumbs? first marker and then ink?
keep it up mate
diaperrash: i wonder who's the wes fanboy in here, perhaps the person that
feels the need to register on the forums, just to defend him?
so what if some sketches reminds you of wes burtleys, that should only be
considered as a compliment and nothing else. Artists develop their style
constantly as they draw or paint.
actually, what you are saying about "emulation" is completely wrong, it's the
most effective way humans and other animals learn from each other, obviously
you're not aware of this?
I don't wanna start a discussion here, i'm just tired of people accusing others |

Matt: Thanks alot buddy, I am glad you like those!
Nag: Thak you very much!!
DiaperRash: At the beginning of this thread I wrote that I was inspired by many artsist not Wes only. At my thread at CA I mentioned Wesley Burt as huge source of inspiration in my opening. Emulation is very imortant at beginning stages. Your own style will emerge from thereon. Look at masters from way back. They all emulated each other. It's easy to see. That's not a bad thing as long as you stay honest to yourself.
I think the images I've posted have enough "max-style" going on to seperate them from Wesleys stuff. And they aren't half as good of course. Anyway. Everything you see here is from MIND. Drawn with the information I've gathered by looking at photos, artworks, you name it.
faeklone: Thx dude : )
notic: Thanks alot!!! Yeah, I first lay down several marker thumbs (10%) and forms start to appear. You see patterns and stuff. I go over it with a thin ballpointpen and afterwrds with darker markers. Extremely fast process to explore new stuff.
HevyDevy: Thx. I appreciate it!
Since I always want to add a picture posting in this thread I decided to post this character concept. It's one of about 20 which I am planing to do. Not sure yet if I like the style. It's ment to be "finished looking" so it could work in a movie or game pipeline. I used reference for the guys face.
Thanks for the comments everyone!

Emulations of your contemporaries is basically biting. Artist's who have respect, avoid that shit. It leads to never being as good as the person being bit. Emulation of the old masters, who have all their works in PUBLIC DOMAIN is another thing man. I think you know what I mean. You gotta be true to yourself. Many of the works in this thread are not true to yourself. You gotta find your own voice. I think you will do that too. Just making a point here. |

I think you are kind of extreme here since there are alot of works in this thread that stand on their own completely imho. However I respect your opinion. Just keep in mind that every kind of cirticism should be presented in a constructive and respectful way...thanks! |

Awesome stuff Max, your style reminds me slightly of JoshuaTheJames style.....not a critique, just an observation. I always wanted to emulate Travis Charest :S _________________ Hoochy! |
